Rolling over in sleep and waking up!!
« on: February 10, 2010, 02:46:43 am »
Hi, I've been using the site for advice since my LO was born and we have been using the EASY schedule since about 6 weeks :). My LO is now 5 months and 3 weeks. We have just finished breast feeding and started bottle feeding. Our daily routine is as follows...
6-6.30 - wake up
7am - 7oz bottle
8am - pureed fruit
9-9.45 am - nap
11 am - 7oz bottle
12- 1.30pm - nap
3pm - 7oz bottle
4-4.45-m - nap
5pm - pureed veg with baby rice
6pm - bath, story
6.30pm - 70z bottle
7pm - bed
Only in the last week since we stopped breast feeding has she started to sleep through from 7pm until 6ish. She has always been good at night and we established a good bedtime routine early on, when i was breast feeding she would wake at about 11 and about 3 for feeds and always go back to sleep easily. She fits the spirited baby personality and until she was 4 months she was swaddled at sleep time. And we have only just got a longer lunchtime nap working for us, she still sometimes wakes after 45mins and has to be shushed back to sleep. If she doesn't get this longer nap i really notice a difference in the afternoon.
Now she has mastered 'the roll!' she has started to do it in her sleep, waking herself up!! Our peaceful night times are no more! Last night she woke about 5 times, at 12 it took 1hour and a half to get back to sleep! She rolls onto her side (which seems to be her favourite sleeping position), then when she's actually asleep she rolls onto her front and starts crying out, waking herself up  :(
Is this just a phase? How long will it last? Is there anything i can do? Or do we just need to ride it out?
Laura x

Hi there, has your LO always been on the high end of A times?  3 hours AM A time is pretty high for her age.  Normally they are still getting ~3-4 hours day sleep at that age but since she's sleeping through maybe she's self-regulating.  A time is normally between 2 hr 15 - 2 hr 30/45 by 6 mths.

Regarding the roll, yep it's just a phase and she will quickly learn to get herself back to her side - Finn was sleeping on his side for a long time too once he did the rolling thing.  There is not much to do other than try to let her work it out as much as possible with minimal intervention from you.  No socializing at night just go back in if you have to, flip her back over and shush/pat if you have to but that's all.
The tweaking never stops!

Thanks Wendy. We were having a longer morning nap but it just seems to have become shorter, if she wakes at 6 she has her morning nap earlier and sleeps a bit longer (so 2 hrs 45 is the longest she is awake for). Her total nap time is between 3-3.30 hours. Last night she woke again but fewer times and at 2.30 i put her on her back and tucked her blanket in so she was snug and this seemed to help. She then slept until 6.15.  (We are in Thailand for the winter at the moment, due back in the UK next month).
Thanks again for the support
Laura x :)

Just wanted to suggest a sleeping bag, dd seemed to roll less in her sleeping bag. And loads of rolling around on the ground with mummy during the day would be a good practice.

Thanks Evgenia. Last night i tucked her in quite tightly with her arms still free and that seemed to work, we only had one wake up at 12, she was wide awake, but back asleep by 12.45. :) We're away from home at the moment but i will try her sleep bag when we get back, she hasn't used it yet as she was always swaddled before we came away. It's really warm here and at night she sleeps in her vest and i used a large muslin square to tuck her in.

Congrats on a good night!

Try the bag when u get back, and if it works u could get a really light one for summer as well. And once the rolling stage is over and they start kicking off the covers the sleeping bag is handy for cold nights. DD still has one.

I weaned my lo from swaddling at 4.5 months & I went through a phase of tucking my lo's sleeping bag tight in the bottom of the cot, and then a blanket/sheet tucked as tight as I could over the top. This helped him for weeks as it limited his ability to rattle around the cot until he was strong enough to wriggle the bag free - now he settles on his front and wriggles round the cot but it doesn't seem to disturb him as much - I guess now he's that bit older he can cope with the freedom better  :). He's now 11 months.

Thanks Jen, i've been tucking her in tightly and that's helped a lot, last night she woke up twice but was back to sleep within 15 minutes. Her first tooth has started to come through today so we'll have to see how tonight goes ;) x
