Crying it out - Night wakings
« on: February 10, 2010, 13:38:49 pm »
my 11 week old wakes up throughout the night.  he does  not always want food and many times wants to play and smile.  needless to say we are getting farily desperate.  we have tried shhing and patting and he is fine until he reaches the bed ... then he goes crazy and cries.  he isn't in pain and is clean and dry and fed.  and what point can we let him cry a bit?  we let him go if he is just making ¨noises¨ but generally always go to him once he starts really crying.

he went through a good patch for about a week last week where we was sleeping in longer stretches.  but now we are back to waking every 2-3 hours.

ANY ideas?

If he's awake and wanting to play it may be that a routine tweak is in order. As for leaving him to cry - well, it depends on the cry. If it is a mantra cry than you can leave him to settle himself. But if it is an 'I need you!' cry then we would always so to go to him straight away.

how are you doing the shh pat?

agree with anna, BW does not support cio. mantra cry is a self settling cry so it's ok to leave him alone if that's what he's doing, and yes leave him if he's just playing/chatting.  but a proper cry you should go in to help him settle.
