Reluctant to DF 5.5 mo old after big dinner!
« on: February 10, 2010, 23:08:38 pm »
I guess I don't totally "trust" my intentions when I DF! Last night my DS breastfed at 5pm, had some rice cereal at 6:15 and then drank 6 ounces of EBM at 7:30! This was alot of food for him in the evening, even though he is nearly 20 pounds!

We have been DFing and having good luck getting his night waking down to just one BFing at 4:30am. We do have to ignore light crying at 2:30 am that lasts less than 10 minutes.

I didn't want to DF him at 10:30 because it just seemed like so much food for him! So, he then woke up at 12:15 and 6am instead, which sucked.

Am I missing the intent of the DF? Is he too big to be getting a DF?

well if your nights are better with the df then i would continue with it.  los will not overeat - they stop eating when full so if you offer a df and he doesn't want it he won't take it.  my only other suggestion is that at this age he should only be having solids once a day and it should be at breakfast, so you could move the solids to the morning and then you wouldn't have the problem of so much food at night.

The purpose of the DF is to help los sleep through the night without feeds. Considering ur lo still has a bf at 4.30 he's not quite there yet to be dropping the df. If u r worried he's not hungry enough for df at 10.30 could u df at 11 instead?

And as brenda said, dont worry about him eating too much, if he's not hungry he won't feed.
