EASY and NW - 7 wk old
« on: February 11, 2010, 18:24:45 pm »
Hi All~
My LO is 7 weeks old today and we are on a 3-hour EASY routine.  Everything is working well, however I am a little confused regarding her NW.  Last night, she woke at 2:15, 4:15, and then again this morning at 7am.  I nursed her at each waking, as she seemed hungry and at her age I am assuming that I should be feeding her throughout the night.  My EASY routine from yesterday is posted below.  Can anyone help me understand the NWs?  Why is she waking up every 2-3 hours during the night?  Is this normal?  Should I be feeding her at each waking oe just trying to settle her back to sleep?

E - 630AM
A - 730 - 815
S - 815 - 930
E - 930
A - 1015 - 11
S - 1115 - 1PM
E - 110
A - 145 - 230
S - 240 - 430
E - 440
A - 5PM - 520
S - 530 - 550 (CATNAP)
E - 630
A  - 700 (BATH, BEDTIME ROUTINE)
E - 730 (3oz bottle) - she does not usually get a bottle, but my DH was on duty while I was out.  I would normally BF (cluster feed) here
S - 8PM
DF - 1045 (3oz bottle)
S - 1115 - 215AM
E - 215
S - 3AM - 415AM
E - 420
S - 5AM - 7AM

Any insight you can provide regarding the frequent wakings would be appreciated.  Thanks so much!!

This actually looks good to me. The 7 AM doesn't count as a NW since that's when her day probably will start. 2 NW for a 7 week old BF baby is good. What you'll see happen next is that the 2:15 one will drop off (maybe in a few weeks ~10 weeks or so) and then she'll gradually extend the 5 AM one. great job! If you notice an increase of NW at her age it could be a growth spurt or it might be too much A time, but right now, I think you are spot on.

Your EASY looks really good. You are getting fab naps, and she is eating on a good regular Schedule. There is a BIG GS at 6 weeks, so your bub may be having this a little late if you find she is waking a bit more often but i agree with pp, 2 nws for 7 weeks is very good. Don't worry about feeding in the night at this stage, as long as you aren't feeding to sleep and she is indepently going down for naps then you are teaching her the gift of how to sleep indepently and so she will only wake if a) hungry, b) uncomfortable i.e. cold or hot wet nappy etc. Well done you! You are doing fab xxx

Thanks Ladies!

Well, I knew that yesterday was too good to be true  :)

I was a little confused on how I should have handled this evening as she missed her 40 minute catnap.  How would you suggest that I adjust when this happens?  My instincts told me to skip her bath and put her down for bed at 7pm.  I started to second guess myself and went ahead with the bath, another feed, and then attempted to put her down.  She was OT and had a difficult time settling.  My husband and I took turns holding her, and by 9pm, I nursed her again and she was finally asleep in her crib at 940pm.

So, now I guess I will skip her DF tonight and just wait until she wakes up????

if they miss the CN, go to bed earlier. OT sets in easily at this age. My LO never took a DF so I always just waited until she woke up. It's all a learning game and I think you are doing great!

I agree with pp. If you find she doesn't nap well, don't worry about sacrificing a bath for OT. At this age its not a necessity anyway. Work getting an early bedtime instead, but well done you are doing a great job! xxx
