How do naps fit into the routine when solids are introduced?
« on: February 15, 2010, 01:11:14 am »
Hi there,
Not sure if this should be on the napping board or not, but I've just got DD to start napping well and now we're introducing solids. I'm hoping not to disrupt her napping schedule too much, so I just want to make sure I understand the eating routine w/naps & A-time included. Here's how I understand that it should go for week 1:

7 - 7:30am - breast
7:30 - 9am - activity
9 - 9:30am - solids + breast
9:30 - 11:30am - nap
11:30 - 12pm - breast
12 - 2pm - activity
2 - 4pm - nap
4 - 4:30pm - solids + breast
4:30 - 7pm - activity
7pm - breast + bedtime routine and in bed
10 - 11pm - dreamfeed

Is this correct? Please let me know if I am mistaken.

Thank you!

It's definitely the right idea.  Most people start by offering solids just once a day for the first week or 2 to see how it goes.  I would just start with your morning session and then add one mid-day later. Generally you just want to offer solids an hour (or so) after milk since milk is the most important thing nutritionally and you want to make sure she doesn't decrease her intake.

Does she usually take a full BF at 9 before her nap?  If she does, you don't want to interrupt that.  I would just offer solids during A time, maybe around 8.  Startingsolids earlier in the day gives time for any tummy discomfort to pass before bedtime so it won't disrupt nighttime sleep.

To that end, when you do start the late afternoon feed I'd give milk at 4 and then wait a bit for solids, maybe until around 5 or so.  But if I were going to add a 2nd feed it would be around 1.

Does that make sense?  :D

Does she normally have the breast again before nap?

I would suggest:

7 - 7:30am - breast
8am solids
7:30 - 9am - activity
9:30 - 11:30am - nap
11:30 - 12pm - breast
12:30 solids (usually one one meal of solids when first introducing them, but this would be a good place to add them later)
12 - 2pm - activity
2 - 4pm - nap
4 - 4:30pm - breast
5:30 solids (again usually one one meal of solids when first introducing them, but this would be a good place to add them later)
4:30 - 7pm - activity
7pm - breast + bedtime routine and in bed
10 - 11pm - dreamfeed

Sorry, I should have mentioned our current routine. We are on a 4-hour EASY, with me feeding her at 7, 11, 3, 6:30-7 and then at 11 (we are still doing a nighttime feed to at about 2-3am)

Then I would not add in more breast feedings.  Generally solids are added about an hour after milk, as part of A time.  Naps should not be affected.
