crib to bed to own bedroom transition
« on: February 15, 2010, 19:44:21 pm »
 :)

We live in a very small apartment in Oslo, we couldn't afford to rent a two room apartment so in the meantime we saved money and bought a place. We're moving in March/April. Our son is going to get his own bedroom and I'm not quite sure how to make the transition, cold turkey or not? We have a pretty good routine, and never had any problems with falling asleep for naps and nightime (well, at least for a long time). He does sleep with a pacifier and do wake up at night once in a while, even though lately he's been waking us because of nightmares and/or noise he does when sleeping, early bird as well but we don't mind that too much. He still has a bed with four posts, but we're thinking about taking one off when we move.

Question:
First night in the new place: in his own bedroom with a 3 sided bed and without us sleeping in the room?

He's 26 months

If it were me I might leave all four sides on for a bit once you move to give him a chance to get used to having his own room first, unless you think he is the type of kid to take it in stride. We kept our oldest in her crib until 2.5 but switched our youngest to a toddler bed at 16 months. Difference was that Masyn already knew she could get out of bed on her own whereas Spencer still hasn't figured it out!

We moved when our oldest was 12 months and she took to the new house better than we did, so he might just surprise you by how flexible he is! Does he fall asleep on his own now?

Yeah he does, bath/wash, book, sang and then I leave the room, no problem. He's using a pacifier, which I don't mind as he's always refused a dummy...so I let it be. We try to limit paci use but he's teething (3 molaires at the same time).

Ouch! Hopefully the molars are done by the time you move! I would think since he is used to falling asleep on his own that having his own room won't be too hard, just different when he wakes up a night and you aren't right there. We used a paci for our oldest until 2.5...I would put 6 or 7 in her crib so she could always find one! If he doesn't like being alone, you could always try one of these methods:

I think it will be ok, I will use the bed the way it is now and take the sides down later this year, I will also put several paci in his bed, he doesn't really wake up when he misses his paci, but I did have to put a night light on the past week at night, the only thing that put him back to sleep. Walk in/ walk out is something I didn't think about, let's hope we won't have to use it...
Thank you for your help!
