multiple night wakings
« on: February 16, 2010, 13:06:02 pm »
Hi,
I'm having so many issues right now with my 3 mo old I don't know where to start.  Last night he got about only 5 hours of sleep due to all his night wakings!  Here is what I wrote down from last night:
Asleep 720pm
Awake 745, 755, 900, 945 replaced paci went back to sleep
DF 1030
Awake 1055, 1115, 1150, 115 replaced paci
at 115 he wouldn't settle back down so I tried sh pat and he slept fitfully until 200
200 spitup/burped multiple times (has reflux)
Asleep 215-430
445-515 restless
530 BF
Obviously it's a disaster in multiple ways.  It seems pretty obvious that paci is a prop now right?  How do I wean him from that?  In addition we are swaddling him but he continues to break free after fighting it.  I will leave him out and he continues to knock out paci so it is a vicious cycle.  One arm out just makes him more mad.  Does it usually take time for them to adjust to both arms out?
The night before he was awake after almost every 45 sleep cycle and then sometimes more when paci fell out.  :(

Please please help me.  Thanks.

Hugs, have been there, and it is rough  :)

I also have a lo who has bad reflux and was a terrible sleeper for the first few months until we finally got the correct medication and dosage for him...then within 2 nights (seriously), he slept like a dream!  And slept through the night almost consistently until his dosage needed changing again.  Of *course* there are many other reasons why a baby can be waking many times in the night, but when your lo has reflux unless this is pretty much under control it is VERY hard to tackle the other things (overtiredness, routine issues, props etc etc) as they are in pain and it's hard to sleep when in pain  :(.  He is obviously overtired since he is sleeping so little, and of course that adds to the difficulties.

What medication and dosage is you lo on for reflux?  How long has he been on it, and have you felt it ever made a difference?

I would do any kind of 'accidental parenting' to get him to sleep at the moment - naps in the car, upright in a sling, holding him to sleep etc - as he just needs to get as much sleep as possible.  Make sure his room is pitch black and use white noise if it helps.  Really *anything* that will help him sleep!!  You probably are doing this already - but keeping them uproght for 30 mins after feeds, and propping their cot up on some books helps.  Also, when winding them not being too vigorous, and also not rocking them to sleep (as it may bring acid back up).

I personally wouldn't worry too much about the paci at the moment, but others might have another helpful perspective.  Obviously it is causing some issues, but if it soothes him when he is pain then perhaps it is good for him to have it. I know it helps many lo's with reflux, and my ds had one for this reason.

Forgot to add - have you been on the reflux board?  There is some great advice, and lots of mum's who have been through similar things - you'll find it in the health section of the site.  I don't know how to put a link on - sorry  :-\!

Thanks so much.  I'll have to check out the reflux board.  It has been well controlled until about a week ago with Prevacid twice a day.  I called his dr yesterday about upping the dosage and hopefully she will get back to me today.  We tried Zantac first and it didn't seem to help at all.
I've been doing just about anything to help him sleep too.

Is this when the multiple night wakings started - a week ago?  What was his sleep like before this?

If you were on a routine before it might be helpful if you posted it as if there is some things that could be tweaked then that might help when his meds get sorted out again.

While things are this bad it might be worth giving pain medication to help him sleep at night/naps - paracetomol is better that ibroprofen for lo's with reflux because it has less effects on their tummies.

I will take time to post our routine when I have a chance later today.  I'm not familiar with paracetomol.  What is that?  I have called his dr today and she increased his dosage.

Oh that's great he has increased her dose!  It could take up to 2 weeks to see a difference - but most people seem to find it gets better within a couple of days.

Paracetomol is the Uk name - I'm not sure where you are based - but have a look on google and I'm sure you'll find your equivalent easily.
