Too much awake time for a 4 week old ? ?
« on: February 16, 2010, 16:09:08 pm »
Hi all, I am a 2nd time BW'er but starting from scatch as my DS is now 5 so it's all a bit fuggy. Have been trying to follow the EASY plan for No2 (girl, Amelia) but although the feeding is going really well the napping is not so much.....

She's just coming up to 4 weeks and yesterday she was awake from 7am to 11am without a nap - hubby and I both tried the shush/pat and she had her dummy too (I hate it, but she loves it and seems to calm her down for sleep but keeps falling out!) Eventually she did sleep, waking at 1.15 for her feed which is fine, then slept again after lunch as we were walking with the pram. This morning, same thing - awake at 6.40, fed, but this time I put her on my chest for a nap till 8am, which I know isn't ideal but it was a bit of a rough night so the only way I was going to get a rest!

She woke up at 8.00, fed again at 8.30 but then awake again till 12 with just a cat nap of 30 mins when  I left her with hubby to have a break! Should I just live with it or persevere - she eventually went to sleep but only at 12.20, then awake at 2.30. I have her down again now but she's been up there 20 mins with dummy and our version of a swaddle (I tuck the blankets in under the moses basket  mattress as she screams blue murder if I swaddle her properly.

Night time doesn't seem so bad but I'm worried about increasing use of the dummy, don't want to make it a prop that will create regular waking. As you can tell I'm a bit confused and feeling a complete failure as I was so sure it would be easier with No 2 and I don't seem to be managing it well at all.....I'm inclined to go with the flow for a bit, especially since it's half term and my poor son is missing alot of mummy time as I battle with getting the routine entrenched.

Help please...!
Luci - mum to George, born 14/11/04

Hi there, at 4 weeks you pretty much just follow your LO as best you can.  Build your day around the principles of EAS but some LO's have a hard time adjusting to life outside the womb and need those conditions to be recreated as much as possible.

Have a read here for a typical newborn EASY:

They are only awake for about an hour at a time, which includes feeding, burping, diapering, winding down.  So eyes open to eyes closed.

IMHO I would persevere with the swaddle, they all fight it but when it's done really tight it is really effective.  I wouldn't worry about the dummy at this point.  That is something that can be weaned later.  Right now you want to turn on all her self-soothing abilities and sucking is one of them :-) Do you have a carrier you can put her in while you spend time with your son?  She might sleep better being closer to you.
The tweaking never stops!
