Diluting onto cows milk
« on: February 26, 2010, 21:58:59 pm »
Just a quicky  :).

I'm finally trying to get J onto cows milk (recovering MPI, and a very fussy eater with poor weight gain - Mummy didn't want to rock the boat  :P).

Started on Sunday diluting it (he will not 'just switch' - he is a stubborn, food refusing so and so) and am now on 4.5oz cows milk and 3.5oz formula. I know from doing it before that this where it gets harder as the flavour changes a bit more from now on.

So how fast? Or how slow?

I'm also worried about uspetting his tummy or reflux (especially after a rather green poop today  :-X) but he is on a cows milk formula so *should* be OK.

Hmmmmm...

When I switched my dd, (at 13 mos), I'd add just a 1/2 oz  of milk to her 6 oz bottle and do that for an entire week, then I'd add 1 oz and wait a week, and from there I'd increase just 1/2 oz at a time with a week in between. I was super-neurotic about it LOL!  I felt like she never really noticed a change, since it was so gradual.

I did the same thing, but up one oz at a time per week to go from ebm to soy milk.  Started with first thing in the morning so he'd be extra hungry (pumped instead of bfing if I was home) and we didn't have any troubles!

I did 1oz a week less of formula and 1 oz more of cows too. We had no probs but DS doesn't have allergies and is a good eater/drinker so I probab ly could have just switched cold turkey but I am a neurotic mum and so did it gradually!!!

Good luck,

Liz, this is the stage where we also got stuck - when it was about 50-50 and moving towards more of the new and less of the old. Same when we switched to Nutramigen, same when we went onto the new HA formula when we moved to Germany.  It's a point where they cotton on to what you are doing and just be stubborn!

I never worked on a set "this much per this time" so never a rule of 1 oz per week for instance. We went with things on DS's pace..when he was finally happily drinking his normal amount of 50-50 milk for a few days, I'd increase it a bit more.  When he was happy with that, then a bit more. We'd have times where I increased it by 1/2 ounce and stuck with it for a week and times when we went a full ounce and it only took a day or two - depending on his mood ::)

Certainly looks as though most went super slow  :).

We make so little progress with J and his eating that I guess I am trying to rush a tad just so we have 'done something' recently iyswim?

He is fussing a bit at the moment so I guess I will stick for now until he seems to have forgotten again.

Hi, LizJ and we're in the process of switching to cow's milk also.  Just wondering.. how can you tell if DS isn't happy with the new "taste"?

He just fusses a bit more, and leaps on and off it. He obviously is 'OK' with it as he is still drinking it - but the amounts have dropped a tad.

But if he hated it he wouldn't have any at all!

aaaah i see... so if DS happily drinks it, then I can continue increasing?  Actually DS seems to be less satisfied after the same amount.  But yesterday he had more BMs and soft stool.  Perhaps I should take it slow also as PP.  Thanks and good luck to you!

Yeah we did it - FINALLY at 18+ mths J is drinking pure cows milk  ;D.

I think it took about 3 weeks in total, and he does seem to prefer the taste now.

Still warm, and still in a bottle, but hey! Progress none the less!!

Well done J!! We have a similar fusspot eater and drinker - 16.5 months milk out of a bottle or me, nothing else, sippy cup was tried for a month until he got poorly and completely refused and I just gave up :( .

I think I have been doing it wrong as I've been introducing his cow's milk in his beaker (was hoping to tackle two things at once), with breakfast and lunch. Lucky if I get a sip out of him. In fact I've been really pleased with sips - clapping and cheering like a crazy person. The rest is dribbled, spat out, flung, tipped... sigh.

Think I might try your version and just give it 3 weeks, one ounce at a time, in his bottle and get that tackled before moving onto the beaker. He'll drink his juice out of beaker perfectly fine but gets quite upset when milk appears in it.

Thank you - I now have a plan!

Well done J and Liz!  We were doing so well and then DS was sick with double ear infection and couldn't eat anything :(  So I didn't want to just give cow's milk as formula should have more balanced nutrition, right?  But when he's feeling better, he would drink cow's milk from a sippy.  I guess we're fully transitioned also unless DS is ill and can't eat solids.  But that's a totally different thread!

Hope things are better at work for you also, Liz!

Tasha - I tried the cup and the cows milk as well at first and it was a no go. I've also tried a cup and formula and it was also a no go.

I decided to go for cows milk in the bottle as that way when I am trying the cup it just comes out of the fridge and is less hassle with all the wastage  ;).

Hoping for some cup progress at some point though  :).

Yep - we tried the cup and formula and that was a huge no go. Milk everywhere. I really like the idea of less wastage (and cleaning!).

DS will take juice in a cup, but I can't fill it very much and he mostly blows bubbles into it. :)
