How to teach tipping
« on: March 10, 2010, 20:55:39 pm »
Finn can drink from a cup...if we hold it for him.  He can also drink from his straw sippies.  But a regular sippy he sits there trying to suck it up as if it were a straw.  He does the same with his bottle.  He's only just learning about tipping the bottle but when you give him a cup he sits straight up again and sucks furiously at it.  Very funny to watch but also not helping matters.  How did you teach your LO to tip the cup?  If I try to tip it for him and show him with his hands he gets mad.  But I don't want to be holding his cup all the time either.

Tips? (pun intended)
The tweaking never stops!

Sorry Wendy, we're a bit stuck on the "how to teach LO not to tip" phase over here. Hand the boy a sippy and his eyebrows raise for a fraction of a second while he contemplates where he's going to do the tip&drip as I like call it.  He tips, it drips, he pulls the phoney shock reaction "OH!!! ohh!!! I've just dripped my milk all over the suede sofa!  AGAIN!!!  Better get a towel and smear it in further!"

FFWD to two hours later and it's the same thing, but replace milk with apple juice and suede sofa with freshly cleaned laundry.

Hey - maybe that's your key: a new suede sofa!!!

Sorry, I've just realised that I left out my only actual suggestion....I think we had to make a big game out of it. DH would "cheers" a drink with DS and then exaggerate tipping his own head back and his cup with him, so that DS would lean his head back and cup at the same time.

I think E just got it on her own eventually - possibly from watching M do it.  Your best bet is probably just to model it for him and wait until he catches on - he will!

T just kinda figured it out on his own too.  For the longest time I had to tip even his sippys for him.  It was frustrating, because he'd walk over to me with one and hold it out for me to take and hold for him!  But then one day around 15mos he just 'got it', and that was that.

We just kept showing Finn how to do it and holding it for him. Took a while but one day I wasnt right beside him and he wanted a drink so he picked it up and did it. Think you are going about it right way.. just give it time and then once they have mastered it EVERYTHING will get juice/milk/water poured over it!!

I think 15% of the bill is standard, unless service is already added.

(sorry ;) :P )
