« on: April 12, 2010, 10:10:34 am »
Hi there,

Just a quickie - When is it ok to introduce prawns to our LO's.  DD has just turned 1.

TIA,

They say to wait until after 1 yr like most other high allergens. DS had loads of fish before 1 yr and around his 1st bday had prawns/shrimp that my Dad made one day and loved them.  We have no allergies in our family either nor did DS have any issues with foods. The other concern with shellfish is not just the allergen situation, but the higher risk of food poisoning if not bought fresh or ill prepared or stored incorrectly as LO's immune systems aren't quite as strong as an adults to fight that.

We tried them around or shortly after the one year mark.  But no prior allergies here so I wasn't too worried.

hey Aisling,

Thanks for the info.  Will give them a try as DD is refusing everything off a spoon so I thought it would be something easy for her to pick up and eat herself.

Emma - I totally agree - I can stand prawns either!  Make me feel ill just thinking about them!!  Yuk!

Thanks again,

Siobhan

I'm pretty sure when my dad (Mr. Seafood of the family lol) made them for DS they were peeled and cleaned and frozen ones that he sauteed in a bit of butter for him.  Truth be told, I was bit scared all day waiting for a reaction, even though I knew it was highly unlikely.

We also tired them just after 1 year and no food allergies here.  Weird thing is she loves them!!!  Especially made up in a salad sandwich.
