Finger Foods and The Three Day Rule???
« on: April 15, 2010, 02:18:26 am »
Hi!

Tyler is 8 months and has been successfully on solids since 4 months old. I have been anxious to begin finger foods, but I am curious on the process of introducing them. Do I introduce as I would his first solids? One at a time and give for a few days? I ask, as the other night we went out to dinner and Tyler was so interested in what we were eating that put some broccoli and tofu pieces in front of him to see what he would do. Both foods were a first for him and although he didn't eat much (mostly played with it), I was wondering if I was only suppose to give one of them (since he has never had) and if I had to continue for the few days following to see if there are any allergic reactions? I have heard mixed responses. Some say to follow the 3 day, one at a time rule. And others say to give baby whatever they will eat and just watch closely. What's best???

Thanks for your help.

I think it's whatever you are comfortable with yourself. Has your lo had any allergies at all up until now? Technically, if you had the 2 foods in front of him and he had a reaction, you would know if it was caused by one or the other, so not too much to figure out vs. giving a mixed dish that is made from  more ingredients. I personally do the 3 day, 1 food rule, but my dd had a milk allergy and an oatmeal allergy, so I'm really cautious with ds.

I'm pretty lax on this one.  Other than the top allergenic foods (wheat, egg whites, soy, dairy, peanut, tree nut, fish and shellfish - account for 90% of food allergies) I'll do more than one at once.  I try not to bombard him just so that if he did have a rxn at least I would know if it were one of 2 or 3 foods since at least that keeps it narrowed down.  The point isn't that you're going to keep them from having a rxn, just that you'll know what to avoid in the future.
