Am I doing the right thing?
« on: April 16, 2010, 10:58:36 am »
Please help!! DS is 4 months and was always a good napper during the day and a terrible sleeper at night- he has reflux which is now finally under control with medication at the moment. Since finding the right combination of meds and starting solids (as advised by paediatrician) he has been sleeping so much better, often just waking at 5.30 for a quick feed. HOWEVER he isn't napping any longer than 30-45 minutes anymore! Yesterday I managed to get him back to sleep for another 1.5 hours after a 30 min nap but then last night he was really unsettled once more. Is this related? Also, am I right to try extending him A time if he wakes from earlier naps happy?
Here is our routine yesterday
A 7.00 (meds 30 mins before feed)
E 7.30
A 1 hour
S 8-8.30
A 1.5 hour
S 10- 10.30
E 11.15 (with solids)
A 1 hour 45 min
S 12.15- 12.45
A 45 min
S 1.300 3.00
A 3.00 (meds before feed)
E 3.30
A 1 hour 45 min
S 4.45- 5.15
E 5.30 (with solids)
A 2 hour 15 min
S 7.30

He woke at 2.30 for a feed, 5.00 and 6.30, got up at 6.45.
I know that the last A time is quite long but this is dinner time and I have  daughter I have to take care of too- there doesn't seem to be opportunity to get him down for another cat nap. Was wondering if I should take him for a walk after dinner and then put to bed later? Thanks in advance for any help!!

Hiya!

Your A time does look a bit inconsistent (I know it's hard when you have another LO to look after, I'm in the same boat!!)...at 16 week it should be 1.5hrs-1.45 hrs, usually you should keep these consistent unless he has had a short nap when you may need to reduce his A time following this (might be down to an hour). Short naps are usually OT/UT or OS (but also developmental at your LO's age!).

Are you building in enough wind down time (at least 10 mins?).

Have you tried W2S or HTTJ to get him through to the next sleep cycle?

HTH?!  :)
