solids and milk
« on: April 17, 2010, 19:02:14 pm »
Hi

Tyler is 20 weeks and we are currently in the very early stages of weaning, at the moment he has a little porridge for breakfast and some puree veg lunchtime, however since i've started this i've found it very difficult to get his bottles down him, today for example he has only had 4 bottles of 7oz.  Could this mean he is still too little to cope with both or is it to be expeced that he will want less milk ?  Sorry for the dull questions.

Sarah

You don't want him to drop his milk intake now he has started solids especially at this young age as milk is still his staple diet and any solids are for fun at this stage really. What order are you giving the milk and solids? The best time is 30-60min after his bottle so that he has some hunger for them but it does not fill him up for the next milk feed. What sort of quantity of solids is he having? What volume of milk was he having previously? At this age he doesn't require anything but milk nutritionally (until 26wks) so if it is causing him to drink less it may be worth leaving it for now or dropping to one meal and trying again later.
