Found this site about soy....
« on: April 19, 2010, 23:52:02 pm »
...and since many of us here have kids with different allergies, I thought it might be helpful to some people looking for information and/or alternatives. This is NOT to put down anyone using soy, really it's not; it's just that while reading the info, I thought of all the MSPI folks here, so please read in that spirit. :)

Great of you to post this, Deb.   :-*    We chose not to go to soy when dd was a refluxer, for some of the reasons listed here.  I had NO IDEA though, that nut-allergic kids need to avoid soy...is that common knowledge? It probably is for Moms of allergic kids...but I have never heard that!

I hadn't either.

I had read some rumors that Monsanto in its GMO stuff had put some protein from BRAZIL NUTS into soy. Dunno if it's true but it wouldn't surprise me.  :( That would make some sense. Plus anything you get too much of you can develop an allergy to, and there's no shortage of soy in stuff. :-\

I had no idea either - a little scary since ds is allergic to peanuts AND drinking soy milk for his dairy allergy :-\
D ~ dairy, egg, peanut/nut and mustard allergies

Not sure so much about that one being common knowledge but we were definitely warned of other legumes and nuts being potential allergens (meaning more potential than the average person) because of DS's soy allergy.  Could be just because I read a lot on it when he was diagnosed though, that I knew that?

(FWIW soy allergy outgrown at 12 months no other legume or nut allergies have presented).

A lot of people also don't know that fava beans can produce allergic reactions in sensitive people. On the rare occasions I use a recipe calling for them, I either leave the beans out entirely or substitute lima beans.

Very interesting stuff, thanks Deb!

I like the coconut tonic recipe.   :)  I just perused it because I'm in a rush, but look forward to going back and reading more thoroughly.
