3 MO with short nap problem
« on: April 23, 2010, 16:07:43 pm »
Hello everyone.

I need help with my DS2. My LO is almost 4 mo and in the beginning was a great sleeper. During the day he used to take almost 3 hours naps and at night only wake up one time for a feed and go  right back to sleep, but now we are having some problems with nap time, because he is waking several times during that period. Usually, he sleeps for 30 min. or 45min, and then starts waking several times.

I don't know what to do to extend that time, but I know that he needs to have more sleep.

Can someone help me please.

This is a common problem around this age.  at about 12 weeks, babies go through a shift in their REM/non-REM sleep patterns.  As a result, they experience a light sleep phase somewhere between the 30-45 minute mark.  Because this is new, they often wake up fully and have difficulty going back to sleep.

You need to train your baby to go back to sleep after that light sleep phase.  The most common technique (and most useful!) is the "holding thru the jolts" (HTTJ).  This FAQ describes it more fully (I think it's the 2nd or 3rd question down).

Read it thru, and come back i fyou have any questions.  In my experience it typically takes at least 3 days of being totally consistent with HTTJ for every nap before you see improvement, and then about a week or so before you don't hear them stirring at the 45 min mark anymore.

Let me know if you have questions or problems!

I'll add this one in as well. Some of the same info, some a bit different. We didn't HTTJ, but getting past the 45-minute "shift" was still the goal. :)
