Not sure what is happening - please help me!!!!!
« on: May 05, 2010, 18:44:33 pm »
Not sure where to start, so please bare with me as this may be lengthy!!

Bit of background info first.  DS is 4 months 1 week and is textbook/angel and is on 4hr easy.  He used to sleep STTH and through his naps, with ease and very little intervention from me but not any more.  He now wakes 2-3 times a night and is back to 45 min napping.  I tried to extend his awake time to 1.55hr and am not sure if this has now made things worse as he seems OT.

Everything seems to have gone down hill since he had his 3rd immunisations, i think!!!!! or maybe i have caused this, as DS used to like starting his day at 6.15 every morning, which meant a super early bed time if we had a bad day.  So i looked into this and found that if the LO has his first nap before 8.30am they think it is an extension to their night sleep.  So over the past 4 days i have been extending his sleep, so he wakes up anywhere between 7 and 7.30am.

He also uses a dummy/paci, but spits it out when in stage 1 of sleep - want to cold turkey when easy is back in place, or is this the problem?
He has learnt how to roll over (tummy sleeper) Developmental?
He is swaddled for all naps and night time
His room is darkened and has white noise
He never cries for his food
His wind down is usually about 10m mins

Todays easy - Yesterday was very simialar where DS was awake for 2 and a half hours - tooooooooo much  :'(

3.30 Woke, went back to sleep himself (had rolled over)
5.45 Woke, gargle for 30 mins - went in rolled him back over replugged
7.10 Wake
E 7.15  6 oz
A 7.10 - 8.50
S 8.50 - 10.30 woke at 45 min, rolled over.  I rolled him back over and he fell back to sleep
A 10.30
E 11.05  6oz
A 10.30 -  rubbing eyes after 1hr activity
S 13.10 - 13.40 went out for a walk, would not sleep, tried to get him back to sleep at home with no luck
E 15.10 5oz
A 13.40 - 15..30
S 15.30 - woke 14-10 - 16.55
A 16.55 Bath
E 18.20 6oz
S 18.45
19.30 Woke - resettled himself
22.00 Dreamfeed 5.oz

Total oz consumed = 29

As you can see there are so many things going on, i just can't see what is going on!!!!! I do not want to mess with too many things at once - not really knowing what could be the issue.
I need your help big time, i felt so confident (well i still do- if you know what i mean) but now feel as though i am not sure what i am supposed to be doing.

Thank you for your help

Hey there hun, sorry no one came to the help sooner. You should be very confident, looks like you're doing a great job. It's normal for lo's to not be able to roll back, so that should be resolved by time, but meanwhile you could try & offer loads of practice during A times.

If you're not planning on keeping the paci, then you're @ a good age to get rid of it. I'd suggest to wait till you feel things are better, so that you don't break down & give it back. You could also plan for that by reading a bit on the props board.

It looks like there's something wrong with the times of the routine you posted above, so could you just have a look & repost, exactly when he slept & woke up & I'll look @ both.

About moving wakeup times, I don't think that was an issue, although some babies may take a few days to readjust.

Will be waiting for your updated routine. Feel proud of yourself mummy, you're doing a wonderful job ;)

If he's rolling onto his tummy and he's still swaddled, I'd definitely suggest that it's time to remove the swaddle.

Question - he woke at 6.00am i struggled getting him back to sleep, i could not see if his eyes were opening and closing or staying closed.  I think he drifted in and out of stage 1 right up until 7.00am when i got him up.  Would this effect his awake time? as i have struggled to keep him awake  he is now in bed after only 1.35hr awake time as he was Rubbing his eyes at 8.00. but has slept almost solid throughout his nap only waking once at 35 mins but managed to put himself back to sleep. total nap sleep was 1.5 hrs.

thank you

Sounds like you did the right thing. In that situation there's not much you can do but watch their cues.

They will get better, you guys are already doing great work with independent sleep.

So, today started out great, you had A time of 01.35 & that gave you a great nap, the 2nd A was 01.45 & it looks like it was too much for him, so maybe try 01.35~01.30 & see, not all babies increase their A time as the day progresses, some like my own decrease their A times. So, after that 2nd A time, it was all OT,which caused all those problems.

Also, do you guys do a wind down? That should help get him ready for sleep, so the last 15~20 mins would be your wind down, here's a link about it:

Yeh i do a wind down with DS, walking around with him in my arms for 10 mins, then upstairs close his blinds and curtains, give him a kiss and say "sweet dreams" swaddle him, and off he goes into la la land.

Do you think that his erratic EASY over the past 3 days, has caused his OT?  as he used to be able to do 01.45 A with ease.

How long dose it take for OT to get out of his system? if you know what i mean

That's very possible, as he's giving you good naps with 01.35 I'd stick with that & see, if you get say 50 mins naps, those are UT & you'll need to take care to cut back the next A by 20ish mins or so, so maybe do 01.15hrs max.

It will take a few days to clear up, OT cycles are terrible, but can be broken:)

Ok i am now not sure how to get through the rest of the day, DS and i have had a really rough night from 3.30am he has been waking continuously. We got up at 6.30am and i fed him at 6.45 - he is now back in bed after 1hr A (errrgh)
as he was yawning and rubbing his eyes, as he is sooooo OT anyway, i just put him to bed.

Here is where i am now stuck, with him being on 4 hourly feeds - next one will be due at 10.45
he will nap for 2hrs (or at least i have my fingers crossed) so that means he will start A at 9.30
that means he will have to wait for 1hr 15 mins to be fed - and by that time he will probably be ready for bed again!!

What do i do?

This OT cycle is a real struggle
