Burping a BF Refluxing Baby
« on: May 10, 2010, 19:48:00 pm »
What are the different ways to burp a baby, especially one that is BF and has reflux. I seem to not get all the gas out and/or vomiting that he will do. I burp for like 20 minutes on shoulder or with his chin in my hand and bent over while patting back (or a combo of both). Are there other ways? Should his whole activity time be used to burp and keep upright? How can I get it all out so to speak before he sleeps, because he wakes up a lot, sleeps only lightly because he is always kicking his legs with the gas or turning his head and moving body because of pain/acid/gas- not always sure what. Plus, he usually gets hiccups and spends his "A" time trying to deal with that- not fun for him- I feel so badly. He is 6 weeks old. Thank you!

You could do the hand under the chin sitting up thing, but rub is back in a circle rather than patting.  Helps the wind move a bit more gently so it doesn't push what's on top of it up quite so quickly.  Or you could try gently rocking LO backwards and forwards whilst sitting on your knee.

Hope you get things under control for him soon.

(((hugs))), it's not fun dealing with reflux, my ds had really bad reflux for 6 months where he would throw up 15x a day, had very poor weight gain, and that was on meds (we changed meds and it made a difference). I remember for burping the only way we could do it was as pp said, to lightly rub his back instead of patting it otherwise he'd throw up. We would do a rub from bottom to top (if that makes sense). All movements had to be very slow, no sudden movements, and never over the shoulder for burbs! Have you checked with your doctor about the reflux for meds?

Just adding that DD would only relieve gas with the back rub and a light pat pat below her left shoulder.  I found that the lighter you are on her she would relax more and let go of the gas.

She is now 8wo and well controlled on meds so I have started doing the legs up to chest and bicycle legs at diaper change time.  She loves it and has been a lot happier because I think she was still holding a lot of lower gas even though none was burping up.  I was nervous to try pushing on her stomach b/c of reflux, but we seem to be doing a bunch better here (knock on something)

You could also try holding your LO with your palm on DS tummy and kind of let him hang over your hand?  I know that sounds scary for a reflux bub-DS never would have tolerated it, but DD loves it and gives her plenty of relief.  You could try and if it makes him uncomfortable, stop.  I guess you kind of have to feel each baby out to see what they will allow

I hope you get some relief by your LO aging-that really seemed to be the only thing to help DD :(

Hang in there it will get better
