"S" with pacifier for 10 week old?
« on: May 17, 2010, 20:51:42 pm »
I am implementing and reading Tracy's book at the same time so I haven't been able to find all the answers to my questions.  Just wondering if it's alright to use a pacifier with my 10 month old baby during the S part of EASY?

For this afternoons nap my little guy cried for 45 min all the while I was shh/patting him.  I tried using the pacifier and he was instantly calm.  After a minute or so of sucking he was nodding off.  And within 5 minutes he was out.

But I'm afraid it's considered a 'prop.'  He doesn't take a pacifier and any other time of the day and once he falls asleep it drops out of his mouth and he doesn't wake looking for it at this point.  Is it ok?

It's totally okay, babies this young need to satisfy their sucking reflex, it won't be a prop now, but you'll need to get rid of it @ about 4 or 5 months 'cause that's when it starts to become a prop.

Good luck :)

Welcome to the world of BWing!
Yes using a paci for sleep is fine. Tracy only says it becomes a problem if your LO wakes for it to be replugged. Then it is a prop. If he can get by without it once asleep or replug it himself (when older) then it shouldn't be a problem. I would keep if for sleep only though as it sounds like you are currentlty doing.
Using a paci is actually said to reduce SIDS risks too.
Of course you will eventually have to wean the paci so be prepared for this. I never got around to offering one to my DS so not sure how you would do this. I know some children who still have one at 4! But I'm sure there are lots of babies who used them and their parents weaned them much more easily.

Good to know!  Thank you!!

And good to know about when to wean him off it.  Glad I'm starting this out early.  I can't imagine how frustrating this would be trying to correct all my bad habits once they've really set in.   ;)

(NOTE:  He's 10 weeks, I mistakenly said 10 months in my post...but I think you guys caught my mistake.)

Oh yes I read 10 weeks anyway, prob cos of your title and ticker. 10months and starting with a dummy would not be good.

Defo easier to start early. I started at 3mo and it wasn't too bad but he did offer some resistance. One of my sisters started at 8 mo and it was more difficult but she cracked it. My other sister's baby is 1year this month and she is too scared to think about starting BW now they have so many bad habits!
