All sorts of shapes and sizes
« on: May 22, 2010, 16:07:21 pm »
So I have been doing some reading of threads re: finger foods.  From what I understand about BLW foods should generally be spear shaped and I was reading the spoon refusal thread and it suggested chunks the size of your thumb nail.  Up to this point I have been only really giving DS spear shaped, but he doesn’t really take bites off, he just shoves the whole thing in his mouth.  He does that with fusilli pasta and then it takes a minute but it all eventually gets swallowed.  Just wondering about the shapes and sizes of FF that other people are feeding their LOs, what they have found works, doesn’t work.

I found small pieces to be fine once DS had a good pincer grasp, which he did starting at around 7mos.  I would dice up all kinds of veggies and steam them in a bamboo steamer, then just put them on his tray.  I'd say they were about pea sized.  Things like carrots, brocoli, cauliflower, and beets worked well and he loved them.  Keep in mind choking size is about the size of a grape or hot dog round, so you want to avoid those shapes and sizes for sure, but if your baby has a good pincer grasp on the go you can try small pieces of soft fruits/veggies.  :)

Totally agree with Martina, especially on the choking info, stay way from cutting foods the size of grapes if the food is round in shape as it can work like a plug.

I do all sorts of sizes and shapes with ds- from larger spear shape to smaller like a Cheerio. Got a great tip on here to roll wet or slippery foods around in Cheerio dust so that it doesn't slip out of their fingers, works like a charm!
