short nap..how do i adjust EASY?? new to this
« on: May 22, 2010, 18:58:06 pm »
hi...my LO went down for a nap at 1:30. it only took 10 minutes of pu/pd for him to settle.  we just started this a couple days ago.  the morning nap he slept for an hour, not great, but better than what we've had.  this afternoon, he slept for only 35 minutes. i tried pu/pd for a half an hour.  at that point, i fed him because i was worried he was hungry. (we are switching from 3 hour to 4 hour routine)  needless to say, he never went back for a nap.  how do i adjust the rest of my night. i planned on having him in bed by 6:30-7:00 sleeping.  he is 8 months old! thanks so much!

thanks!i'm so happy someone responded. i have made so many accidental parenting mistakes along the way. my 8 month old son is on a three hour schedule, takes 45 min naps, plus he has never slept more than  hours through the night. he actually has been gettin up every hour at nite. very bad habit of nursing to sleep. i started BW on thursday and i'm proud of the progress we have made. last night he went for 7 hours in his crib, from 7:00-2:00am.(we have been cosleeping). granted, i had to do pu/pd a couple times but that is huge. he didn't eat during that time as well. it went a little off track when he woke up again in around 2am. i was so tired, he ended up with us again in bed because i was worried he was hungry. mistake, i know..anyway, here is how i did today.....(including the short nap that i was referring to in my post)

A 6:30 AWAKE
E 7:00 and 7:20 nursing
   8:00 Breakfast (cereal and fruit)
A 8:20-9:10
S 9:30-10:30

E  11:00 (nursed less than ten minutes)
A  11:20-11:40, Nursed again at 11:45,
lunch at 12:00 (veggie and fruit)
S 1:30 (took 10 mins to settle) woke up at 2:05….tried pu/pd for 30 minutes. Thought he might be hungry.
Fed him at 2:45 (thinking he may be hungry since i am switching from 3 hr routine to a 4 hr routine)
    never went back to sleep

E    3:45 nursing
dinner at 4:00 (cereal and veggie)
A    4:30-5:10
Get ready for bed (nurse, bath, book, bed)
S   5:50 (is this too early? he only had a total of 1 1/2 hr of napping today)

i would love advice on how to tweak this schedule......i'm so worried he will cry at nite out of hunger...he is a snacker because of cosleeping!

Hi there. Just want to say I made loads of AP mistakes with my daughter! She too was co-sleeping till a month ago. You can change bad habits though and you're doing the right thing trying to sort them out now! My little one is now much better after sleep training (she's 4 months now) and often sleeps right through. So I just wanted to say good luck and don't give up! Xxx

Actually I think you did the right thing after that short nap yesterday - a nice early bedtime. At this age I would not recommend trying to squeeze an extra CN in anyway as it tends to backfire.

I really would try and stick to 4hrly BFs at this age - day and night. He will wake from hunger at first but it is not real hunger - it is just being peckish as he has been used to snacking. He shouldn't have an trouble lasting 4 hrs as he is now on solids as well.

I would also say bite the bullet and keep him out of your bed full stop really. Will make for a rubbish week for both of you but then it will be all over so that way is kind of fairest on both of you.

Did your Lo have a napping routine before starting EASY? If so how much did he sleep during tha day?

I think you have done the right thing starting with 3 hrs A time and then tweaking from there.

How did today go?

Nurse at 7:50 (very quick session)
   Breakfast at 8:00
A
S 9:30-10:05 tried pu/pd for half an hour after that.  He would not go back down.  I don’t think he had

    12:00 lunch
A

oh, and btw...he has been so bad at naps since he has been born......major catnapper.....45 mins is usually pretty typical. i'm thrilled i was able to pu/pd for the second nap to extend it another hour. but, his first nap.....no way

I agree that first nap was UT due to not enough A time - and the second was likely OT after too much after a short nap.

I would aim for 3hrs for your first A time and see if that helps - so if he is up at 7am that is a 10am nap.

We then need to find a dcent A time after that - I would say try 2.5-3hrs if the first nap is short but more like 3-3.5hrs if you get a decent first nap (anything over an hour will be fine).

You are making major progress so YEY.

Watch out for the regression and don't get disheartened when it happens  :-* :-*
