Multiple letdowns
« on: June 04, 2010, 11:44:47 am »
My LO is only 1 week old and seems to be the hungriest little thing ever. Her suck is very very strong and she is chugging away through very fast flowing milk from engorged boobs  ::). Then gets all windy but doesn't seem to have the sense to come up for air every now and again  ::).

But I have noticed while she is feeding I am getting several letdowns while she is still on the same side - I remember getting the odd extra one with J but this can be 3-4 times in one side of the feed.

Is this normal or does it mean I should have swapped sides earlier? I am mainly single sided feeding ATM as I am still quite full and have a lot of milk. Also have cracked nipples I am trying to heal  :(.

Thanks  :-* :-*

Congrats on the new LO! How exciting!

I have at least 2 let downs when K nurses. I think it might be the foremilk then the hind milk. I think some people are more sensitive than others and notice the multiple letdowns more than other people might. I only nursed one side in the beginning too and prefer to have the baby completely empty one side before moving to the next side so that they get the fatty hind milk that helps them to gain weight and feel full.

Definately had multiple LDs with Emma and Oscar....Emma would have 4-5 from LHS and 2-3 from the RHS (Ozzie left me left-heavy iykwim in that he ONLY fed from the left for last 2 mths of feeding him from 14 to 16 mths....and now Emma is doing the same....LOL).

Ozzie fed single sided till 4 mths and would have at least 3-4 letdowns from one side, no probs, feeds lasting 45 mins till around 6 weeks or more.
Emma did double sided partic when a feed started on the right.....as she preferred the left....

I'm sure I remember hearing that most mums have several let downs (ie we'll keep producing milk from the same breast for as long as baby is feeding from that side - hence why mums of twins can BF) - it's just that most mums only feel the first one.

Thanks ladies - hadn't even occured to me that this might be something that I could feel and others couldn't - although I do remember that now  :).

I will carry on mainly one side feeding for now, I think  :).
