3 wk old waking at 4 am....
« on: June 07, 2010, 14:14:18 pm »
So far, my lo has been pretty consistent, he'll be 3 weeks tomorrow, and all together seems to be a text book baby, that is up until the last 2 nights. The night before, my lo's dad got up to give him a bottle of BM around 3 am, afterwards, he was wide awake and once I did get him back to sleep, slept very fitfully until I finally got him calmed down after he was OT around 9 am. Yesterday, he slept most of the day, eating every 3 hours, staying awake about 20 minutes after a feed, then right back to sleep. He is exclusively breastfed and only feeds from one side for anywhere from 10-20 minutes. He is gaining well, he's just an efficient eater. I'm not sure that the bottle of expressed breast milk threw him for a loop.

Last night, after eating at 8pm, a bath and some cuddle time, lo was sleeping soundly in his bassibet by 9 pm. Woke for a feeding around 11:15 pm, then back to sleep. Once 1 am rolled around, he was again sleeping fitfully (gruting, the occassional cry) and woke for a feeding. He continued this every 2 hours (He's been waking to eat every 3 hrs, waking me with a small, coughlike cry, and pretty easy to put back to sleep, until the last two nights). Again, he woke at 6 am to eat, slept for about 45 minutes then started gruting and crying again. I'm not sure if this is gas, or a dislike for the bassinet, but it's starting to wear me out. He sleeps wonderfully throuhgout the day and for half of the night until around 4 am.

Also, in addition to the early waking and fitful sleep, it's been much harder to get him back to sleep. He normally eats, gets changed, and once he starts drifting off to dreamland, I'll put him down and he'll go right to sleep. But over the last to nights, he'll fuss, start to cry, I'll have to pick him up, pat him until he calms down, and put him back down. I have to do this sometimes up to 3 times because the pat/shh isn't working.

If anyone has any thoughts, they would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there, do you suspect reflux is an issue at all?
Have a read for the signs:

I did read the general info on reflux and he does have some symptoms such as the frequent spitting up and hiccups. Between the hours of about 4 am and 8/9 am he has a lot of gas as well. He's been doing better with his daytime naps, I suspet the problem was him being OT, but he's still waking and very fussy after his 4 am feeding. I'm going to elevate his mattress slightly because he seems to do better when his head is elevated (either in his swing, in my arms, or in his newborn napper). I also plan to talk to his doc at his 1 mo check up if it persists.

Hi there!  Just another thought...after his 3-4 am bottle, does he burp a lot?  I just wonder if some air is getting trapped and leading to some discomfort?

No, he won't burp at that time, and I think this could be part of the problem. When he feeds from my (R) breast, (which is normally the 3/4 am feeder) it seems that I have an extremely fast let down and he just gulps and gulps, but when I try to burp him, especially at that time, nothing comes up. I'll change positions and pat his back for a good 5 minutes. I was thinking about trying mylicon and seeing if it works, but I don't want to rush to medicate my DS, though it seems I may have to try. Any other thoughts on how to get a good burp?

DS was (and still is at one year) a very burpy boy!  We've used many techniques:

--over our shoulder with his arms up and over.  This lifts LO's ribcage and makes their position straighter...easier for the wind to come up.
--LO sitting up on our knees, we craddle his head very gently.
--rub LO's tummy gently starting at the top and moving in a circle to the left; then try burping in any position
--if all else fails, we laid him flat for a minute or so, and brought him back straight up.  That usually got the burp out as the bubbles shifted around in his tummy while he was laying flat.

Re: the fast letdown (had that, too), have you tried pumping right before feeding him so that the milk doesn't gush out?  I know there are some bf gals out there who could give more advice re: this if you want!

Here's a good site with some really good thoughts about dealing with fast letdown: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/fast-letdown.html

Here's the summary:

There are essentially two ways you can go about remedying a forceful let-down: (1) help baby deal with the fast flow and (2) take measures to adjust your milk supply down to baby's needs. Since forceful let-down is generally a byproduct of oversupply, most moms will be working on both of these things. It may take a couple of weeks to see results from interventions for oversupply, so try to be patient and keep working on it.

HTH! ;)

Thanks so much for your thoughts. I will certainly try these. I saw on another site a mom had a similar problem with the fussy mornings related to a gassy lo, and she recommended feeding from one side only throughout the night. I think I may give that a try also. I'll let you know how it goes. :)

That's one of the things they mention on kellymom, too.  I hope it helps!  Keep us posted. :D

Have you tried Colief? It's quite expensive but most of us in my NCT group swear by it! It helps you get a really good burp! You can get a prescribed by your doctor for a couple of little bottles but then they're reluctant to give you any more. I imagine it's cos of the cost!

Worth a go though...! x

My pediatrician recommended trying Mylicon. I'm going to give it a try and see how it goes.
