Tomorrow is the weekend so at least I know he will have a nice long, restorative nap. I think we'll try changing up bedtime too - I'm thinking, doing some playing on mummy and daddy's bed, then a couple stories, then pyjamas (still on our bed, so we dnot come downstiars and then have to go back up again), then teeth, stories in his bed, lights out. He's very keen on rules and order and knowing what's what, so I'm thinking I might make him a little card he can hold in his hand with little pictures to show all the steps in getting ready for bed - and if he can do them all nicely (maybe put a star on each) then he can have an extra special story. One about a boy called Stan and his bunny, Robert. And a helicopter, oh yes!
Sounds good Anna. The behaviour is so similar to last time so it really does seem to be OT. I agree that lying with him is probably not the way to go with Stan. I would do exactly what you did last time because it did work and it will again. (hopefully!) Hugs xxx

I really have no idea either, Anna!  Your plan from yesterday sounded so good, but then the NW and EW seem strange.  GRRR!  I agree with Becky, though, if that's his behavior when OT, that would be what I would assume.  How did the nap and bedtime go today?

I like the idea of the cards. We used a picture schedule with kids at school before. The reason they liked it was that they could remove the pictures when they were finished and put them in the pocket at the bottom labeled "Finished" and so it was hands on. If you do go that route, perhaps you could make something like that up. So he gets to move it from TO DO...to FINISHED or something hands on so it takes his mind off of the power struggle and focuses on that he is being allowed to move things. Maybe if he really wants control you could let him put them up on the TO DO area in the order he wants?? Maybe he's too young for that still.

So he didn't go back to sleep after the 5.30am waking. I got him down for a nap at 12.15, and he went down easily. I let him sleep 2.5 hours - which I know seems like loads for a kid his age but he could have slept longer - I was a bit conflicted because I know he doesn't really make up sleep overnight but will make it up on a nap.

We changed the bedtime routine up a bit, no TV, upstairs all the way through so no 'having to go upstairs' hurdle to jump, stories in mummy's bed, then teeth, then more stories in his own bed - and touch wood he has gone down with no protest at 7.45.

Thanks hun. After over a year of 5.30am wake ups, it puts the real fear in me when we get an EW. I can't go back to that!

hugs Anna, as you know we've battled the 5.30/5 and even 4.40 am monster here for over two years, on and off, but more around 6am lately so am coping...

but TOTALLY get where you are coming for...
for me, every half birthday or birthday is hard....with both of mine....don't feel the difference between the full and halves....yet!

And with a Jan and April birthday we get over one b'day (Jan) and the other creeps up and then the same with the halves!!!!

Phew. Night back to normal. He woke up at midnight, said he had a tummy ache, but settled down within a couple of moments with me rubbing his tummy and was happy to let me out of the room before he was asleep. Hopefully it was just a few crazy nights to keep me on my toes!

I was also thinking it was the 2.5 year developmental leap... Were those the Gesell Develomental books Anna? I have been thinking of buying the series.

Oh, Anna - when you were replying to my thread I didn't realise you were going through this at the same time!!!

I'm glad things were better last night for you - hopefully you've got a happy Stan on your hands today!

And yes, they really do like to keep us on our toes don't they?!

Yep yep! That's the one! I love the subtitle 'Terrible or Tender', it is so appropriate.
