I think I'll do a longer AM nap then. For her if she doesn't have a good 1st nap, it all goes downhill. She usually doesn't get grumpy in the evening if she's napped well and I do like running my errands mid-day as you said. So I will push out her A time tomorrow and let her nap 1.5 hours for #1. We'll see how it goes.

I think I read somewhere to not let them start their nap after 10 but she probably won't be sleepy until 10:30ish---is that ok?

really? if you find the thread/link that you read this on, I'd be curious to see why.

It's perfectly okay, in MHO. My lo sleeps a couple of minutes after I put her down..whether it's 10..10:05..10:15 etc. I calculate when to put her down when she wakes up...if she's up at 6 from an EW..I put her down at 10 or around this time when she starts getting grizzly.

Hope that eases your worries some? Try putting her down when you think it'll result in a good nap and go from there?

It's in the Healthy Sleep Habits book for sure. It says no later than 10 for AM and 3 for PM. I think I may have read it on a thread here too---I'll look. However, I threw that advice out the window today and put her down at 10:20. She slept for 1.5 hours and woke happy. Then I kept her up for 3.25 and she slept again (down at 3:15) for 1.75 hours. I should have woken her up at 4:30 because now it's almost 8 and she is upstairs rolling around in her crib. Lesson learned.

I'll just keep pushing the A time and hopefully I can re-create this day!

thanks!

If it helps, my LO hasn't done a nap before 10:00 in a long time.  Up till a few weeks ago it was 10:30, now it is more like 11:00 (that's with a ~7:30 morning wake up).

Thanks Nadia and Sarah! I really really really appreciate all the advice. Hopefully I'll have good results to report tomorrow :)

Now if only I could get some sleep. It's 11:30 here and I'm not sleepy at all--maybe I'm OT? :)

I get NWs when I am OT...lol.  Hopefully you fell asleep without any props, but sometimes the odd bit of APing doesn't hurt.  Is your DH good at shh/pat??  ;)

Fingers crossed for a good day for you today!

Ok...things were going good, but we're broken again. :(

For the past 3 days she is REFUSING the PM nap. Today we had our first EW as a result. :(

I've been trying to limit her AM nap to 1-1.25 hours and I have to wake her to do this. I then have been playing with the A time between the first and second nap but am not having any luck. She doesn't cry in her crib just kind of 'nags'--talk to her lovey, yells out, rolls around, etc. I let her do this yesterday for 1.5 hours (I went in twice to tell her to go to sleep, to no avail)! She seemed perfectly content up there...however she's exhausted and even though I tried to move up the BT, she fights that too. Here's yesterday:

E/A: 7-10:15
S: 10:15-11:30
E/A: 11:30-2:30
S: in crib at 2:30---out of crib at 4. no sleep. boo.
E/A: 4-5:30
S: in crib at 5:30---fell asleep at 6:40. still no crying.

I woke up at 6:30 this AM and she was up in her crib awake so I don't really no when she got up...

Today:
E/A: 6:30-10
S: 10-11:15
E/A: 11:15-2
It's 2:30 and she's still up there laughing and giggling.

HELP! She needs this nap still...what have I missed?

hi meg,

We recently were having this issue and had to cut back on the AM nap again - down to 45 min now.  This also meant we had to shorten the first and 2nd A times (3-3.25ish), then give a little longer one after the long PM nap to get around a 12 hr day in.

Perhaps you could try cutting nap #1 a little more and/or adjusting the 2nd A to see if she will accept the PM nap?

Just to add- cutting the first nap is an option. An option that many moms do.

If you do want to keep the first nap at the length that it is, you need to increase the second A as she's not tired from 3 hours of A time. If she's getting 3-3.5 hour of the first A then she needs at least 3.5-4 hours of A for the second.

I really want to keep 2 naps for as long as I can! I am worried that if I cut her down to a 45 min AM nap I'm worried she'll be OT the rest of the day, but I guess I'll try it tomorrow.

She ended up talking in her crib until 3:30 and then fussed for 10 minutes. She slept for 30 min so I got an OT nap. Do you think she needs a longer WD? She's textbook/spirited so she usually needs really quick WDs but maybe something is different for the second nap?

She's down for the night at 7:30 I HOPE!

I think it's more about putting her in her crib at the proper time, rather than put her in UT. They tend to babble and play and then get OT. I think you also went in on one day? Maybe try putting her in at the proper A time?

Ok so tomorrow I'll shorten the first nap (~1 hour) and then extend the A time b/w 1 and 2 nap. I'll try to push the A time to 3.5 hours because she used to do 3 hours. If she still seems UT--I'll extend more the next day. wish me luck!

Meg - sorry hun, I think I wrote what was on my mind but didn't include a lot of details.

IF you decide to cut the first nap, you may need to decrease the A. 1 hour is still decent enough sleep, so keeping the A the same or slightly less should suffice.

IF you decide to keep the first nap as is, you may need to increase the A as she's been refusing the PM nap.

Does she have any teeth that are coming out? Any milestones that have been developing?
