7 Week Old - Wakes every 3 hours to feed at night
« on: June 22, 2010, 22:37:41 pm »
Hello,

My 7 week old son wakes up every three hours to breastfeed since he was born. He is a large baby, born 8 lbs and is now nearly 12 lbs. In the Baby Whisperer book, it says that larger babies should be able to sleep 4-5 hours straight by 6 weeks and we should be able to cut out the 1-2 AM feed. I need help on how to do this, please!

Here is a typical day:

7 AM - Eat
7:30-8:15ish - Activity
8:15-10:00 Sleep

10 AM - Eat
10:30-11:15ish - Activity
11:15-1:00 Sleep

1 PM - Eat
1:30-2:15ish - Activity
2:15-4:00 Sleep

4 PM - Eat
4:30-5:15ish - Activity
5:15-6:15 Sleep

7:00 Eat and get ready for bed

10:30 DF (has a hard time waking for dream feed so I change nappie to wake him up a bit)

around 1-1:30 Eat then sleep

around 4-4:30 Eat then sleep (a little bit fussy and harder to get back to sleep sometimes)

7:00 am Wake and eat again.

Thank you for any advice you can give me!!

What time is he actually going to bed?

He goes to bed around 7:45 after a 25-30 min feed and nighttime ritual of swaddling and lullaby.

Well, he's on 3 hrs like clockwork, isn't he? Sleeps well, otherwise?

I know he's a big baby, but mine was 8 lb 11 oz at birth, and it was 3 months before she slept a 5 hr stretch. I know they "should" give you that stretch, but sometimes they don't, and you may just have to ride this out until the switch kicks in. BUT...you need to sleep too.

One thing to try is instead of spacing the afternoon feedings in 3 hr blocks, try to "tank him up" by feeding at 4, 5:30, and 7:00, and then doing the dream feed at 10:30. Try that for a week, and see if it helps.

Thanks for the advice! I've tried tanking him up and pretty much did that for the first 6 weeks but it didn't seem to help. Maybe I'll try again...

Hopefully the next 4 weeks go by fast! I'd love some more sleep!   :)
