12 mth - nap tweak or moving to one nap?
« on: July 01, 2010, 20:04:19 pm »
As usual - as a lovely settled routine starts to go awry I'm left questioning the best thing to do.

Routine has been
7.15 am woken by noisy brother
10.30-12 nap
3.30-4 nap
7.30 bedtime
STTN (yay!)

That was working really nicely then he started to need bedtime at 8pm as he was UT... then he started to need pm nap a little later which of course pushed bedtime back again... and his am nap is more like 10.45 these days....

Now he's waking earlier but babbling/sometimes going back to sleep...
having mild NWs that he can resettle himself for...
fighting the pm nap...
taking a long time to go to sleep at bedtime...

He's definitley teething at the moment - we've got all the classic signs - so his patterns are probably disturbed because of that... but I was expecting him to need to switch early as his sleep needs have always been on the low end...

But reading around the FAQs I'm now wondering if I should be cutting his am nap to try to make him more ready for his pm nap??

I'd probably most like to hear that i could start edging towards one nap as DS1's activities have all stopped for the summer and I have about 8 weeks in which I can work on getting one nap into place when I choose to rather than fitting it in with also getting to activities...

I'm waffling - can anyone see anything glaringly obvious here? Anyone got any words of wisdom?
Thanks,
Carrie

Yeah, I'd try cutting back on his first nap...maybe to 45min-1h.  That will shorten that next A time, bringing the PM nap forward with--hopefully--no nap refusal :)  I don't think he's ready to make the jump to one nap yet, but try the shorter AM nap for a while and see how it goes :)

Thanks Sara. Would I still be keeping the pm nap to 30 mins/40 mins at the most? Or should I be letting him have a more "restorative" nap if it is early enough? Someone had warned me away from having two shorter naps before, saying one needed to be an hour and a half?? And would I give him his new shorter am nap at the normal time?
Oooh, questions, questions... as a parent life just seems to be full of questions...
