5 mo awake for HOURS at night! (but not crying!)
« on: July 08, 2010, 17:05:39 pm »
Hi - so it's now been several weeks of my daughter waking up and talking to herself in the middle of the night for sometimes more than 2 hours! Is there anything to help ensure she stays asleep?

-she has 5 bottles each day of 6-7 oz formula (do dreamfeed - tried it a couple weeks ago for a whole week, and found it just disrupted her sleep even more)
-she's a decent napper, most days has 2 long naps of 1.5-2 hrs and a short one of about 45min

last couple days have looked like this:

wake 645am
E 7am
S 845ish-1030ish
E 1030/1045
S 1230ish-215/30ish
E 230/245
S 5ish-545ish
E 545/600pm
bath, book around between 7-715
E 720
in bed and asleep usually by 730

i am on day 2 of increasing her food intake during the day. when she wakes, i have been letting her talk to herself for sometimes over an hour! she's not crying! but then i go in, and of course, she needs a diaper change, which i do, and i've sometimes been feeding her to see if it helps her sleep, but usually, she's still just wide awake and happy.  last night i went in after a while (around 1230am) and changed her then just put my hand on her and after about 15 minutes she finally dozed off - only to wake up again around 415am, at which point i thought, ok i'll give her a couple of ozs of formula to tide her over till the morning, and sure enough, it did.

my plan right now is this: 1) try increasing her daily calories to see if it helps for a few days, and if no change is noticed, then 2) try W2S (because she seems to be waking up around the same time every night, around 11-1130pm).  any other suggestions? as i said, this has been going on now for some time ....

Thanks! :)

Yes, more A time is definitely something I've been working on. She's in her first week of 5th month. she can do a good 2 hours of A time. Actually, last night, she got up only once, still happy of course (haha) but with a very dirty diaper. Then an EW this morning with the super loud rain, but I sent her back to sleep for a bit. That's the other thing - yesterday and the day before, she woke before 6am and I put her back to sleep until just about 7, and the nights were better than they had been. Will definitely keep trying more A time though! Thanks!

Well, we had a good morning, with 2hr10min of A time before 1st nap which was at 915am .... then she had a nightmare (i think) and woke up screaming about 1hr15min into her nap :(     so her A time after that wasn't as good, but she's napping again now (since 1215...) poor little thing.  oh the joys! :)

another question - if she wakes early, say around 5 am, and i am able to get her to go back to sleep until 630 or 7 if i'm lucky (wasn't lucky this morning!), is it normal for her first A time to be really short? this morning, she went back to sleep until 630 but then started rubbing her eyes really early, around 715.
thanks!

ok, i am completely and utterly at the end of my patience from being so tired. longer A times are not seeming to make any difference. the increased calories don't seem to be making much difference, as she doesn't always finish the bigger bottles anyway. we've also tried earlier bedtimes, later bedtimes... no difference. she's now waking at night all over the place, so W2S won't work. last night was the first night she woke crying - tiwce! - i fed her, but to be honest, i think it was because the house was really really hot last night and she was uncomfortable. i must be doing something wrong - don't get me wrong, i'm over the moon that i have a happy baby, but both of us really need some good quality sleep. :(

Does she have a dummy?

Have you tried cutting the pm catnap to say 30mins to see if that helps?

ok, the last couple of days have looked liked this:

wake between 630-700 am
E 700am - 6-7oz
S 830/845 until about 1030
E 1045
S 1230/1245 until about 230
E 245
S 430/500 until no later than 6 --> see note below RE this nap
E 530/600
bath, book, bottle, bed by 730

the catnap may be a problem, but she can't seem to do without it. if her naps during the day were restless or not great, i usually let her have a bit longer of a last nap. i almost feel as though her day time sleep is robbing her of her nighttime sleep.

she has a pacifier for sleep times only.

for her NW, i usually lay in bed listening to her for a while on the monitor until either a) she starts whining or b) it's been over an hour, at which point i go in, usually have to change her diaper because she's soaked, and then put her back in her crib, give her her lovey, and just lay my hands on her or sometimes pat her bum to calm her back to sleep. there is no talking, not even shhh-ing, and i only turn on a nightlight to change her. i even avoid all eye contact so as not to have her think i'm there for a good time! ha! also, i have tried feeding her when she wakes and not feeding her when she wakes and both have the same results: she's up again about 3 hours later.

i feel like i'm in a vicious cycle - she plays at night so then is tired during the day and needs her naps and if she doesn't get them, or doesn't get good ones, then she's tired all day and becomes overtired and cranky, only to disrupt her nighttime sleep. i was ready to accept that this was that 4 month sleep regression because she used to sleep for 6-7 hours at night, eat, then back to sleep for a few more. but this has been going on now for over 6 weeks - it's a pretty long phase! like i said though, she's a really  happy baby, but these broken nights are killing me, and more importantly, i don't think that it's necessarily good quality sleep for her broken up into chunks like that.

thanks so much for the help. :)

I would def cut that catnap to 45mins MAX and see if that helps. Yes the first day she is going to be more tired but I do agree that maybe she is getting a little too much day sleep.  It's worth a try perhaps?

You may also be finding that the paci is becoming a prop, I know for us DS would spit it out just so I would go and put it back in ;)

ok, so the catnap was only 35 minutes last night, and it almost made it worse!! she was very restless before midnight, waking up breifly twice! then, again at 2 am, at which point i fed her a whole 6oz bottle and it took her an hour to fall back asleep. then restless starting at 430 until 630am. this can't honestly be good sleep for her, can it?!?!?!? (i know i'm not getting much either, obviously ....)

I agree with Jane - stick with 45mins for 3 days or so and see.  {{HUGS}} good luck.
