Can a change in sleeping method be a reason for NWs?
« on: July 15, 2010, 21:06:06 pm »
I have a 14 wo DD and we are working with her to make her sleep indepently on her own.

Luckily she has always been a good night sleeper. At 4-6 weeks she started STTN and for the last month her nights were consistent. She was in bed around 8.30 and slept for 8-9 hours in one strecth. I was allowing her to fall a sleep in my arms or while BF and holding her for 20 mins more to make sure she is totally sleep before putting her to her crib.

2 weeks before we started to wean our way of falling asleep in mummys arms. Now I am trying to put her in her crib before she is totally asleep. I have some problems with the method and I am working on this in General Sleep forum but there is one issue I wonder. Her night sleep has changed. She is now waking up around 1-2 AM after sleeping 5-6 hours. This is her only one NW, then she wakes up at 6 AM. I am trying to figure out what changed her sleep pattern. I suspect either the sleeping method or the feeding time.

She is exclusively BF, and taking shorter feeds nowadays. Our ped says this is normal. But i tried to have her longer feeds suspecting that this may be the reason for her NW but she does not take more.

Did you encountered a change in sleeping pattern (in a negative way I mean, I was expecting more positive changes :) ) when you weaned a prop and tried to encourage independent sleep?

For now I fed her as this is only one NW. Hope that I am not creating any AP. Appreciate any advice.

JAY3, thanks for your response.. I am not able to post our EASY as it is changing from day to day. Usually he is on a 3-3.5 hr EASY routine. But nothing is predictable as her wake up times and nap lengths change day by day. We are not lucky to have a consistent routine yet. But she is doing better with her NWs. She started to sleep long streches like in the old days. I was upset to loose the great sleep habit she has but reading the forum more and more I understand nothing is consistent and we are at the beginning of the road, more will come, so I am thankful to my DDs one feed right now :)

I am trying to make her sleep independently so I calm her down in my arms and put her in her cot while she is sleepy but half way awake to close her eyes in the cot. We started this 3 weeks ago. Before that she was sleeping in my arms and I was putting her down when she is completely asleep.

By week 8-9 she started to sleep 7-8 hrs long strecthes. And a few days after we started this "putting down while awake and calming down in crib" she started to wake up randomly sometimes. For example she woke up at 1.30am last night for feed and then slept till 7.30am. (she sleeps around 8.00-8.30by the way). I was hesitant to feed her in her unexpected NWs but now I see even I do she sleeps till she is hungry again or till morning, whichever comes first :)

the main difference for yesterday was we really had bad times to make her sleep for her naps, lots of cry and a very stressed mum. She had short naps (30 mins, she ususally sleeps 45-1hr) maybe this was the cause for her NW.

I am taking everthing easy today and we will see how will be our night :)
