Hardly eating!!
« on: July 20, 2010, 14:45:48 pm »
Hi there,

DD is 16months old and is teething quite badly (Very sore gums!).  She also had an allergic reaction to something and is covered in a rash - resulting in a few very sleepless nights!!.  She has hardly eaten a thing since Friday last week (Tuesday today).  She screams away from the spoon, wont eat her fruit/veg - she just throws everything on the floor!!.  She will take yogurt and still drinks her milk.  Any ideas as to what I should feed her or should I give her more milk to make sure she is getting enough calories?  I have tried numerous things and now her 'No2's' are really dry so I suspect she is constipated.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

TIA,

Siobhan

Fruit if she'll eat it....or very diluted juices; prune, etc. so that the constipation eases and she doesn't get dehydrated. You can make smoothies using a variety of things: peanut butter, fruits and veggies, yogurt, milk, etc. Look up some recipes...and that should get some calories in her. She may do better with that type of thing since her gums are bothering her.

If she won't go for anything, try to keep fluids into her. Also, you can medicate prior to eating times to help ease any gum soreness.

HTH.

Hi there,

Thanksfor the reply.  I have just noticed some wee blisters on her tongue and inside her mouth.  This is probably another reason why she is not eating.  Is there any meds to give for this? I like the idea of smoothies, will give that a try.

Thanks again,

Siobhan

Probably just tylenol or motrin to help alleviate some pain. I don't think there is anything you can give LOs for mouth sores at this age. The only other thing I can think of is to avoid acidic things: citrus fruits, tomatoes and tomato based sauces, etc.

Poor thing (and mama) she must be so uncomfortable! Will she do smoothies? You can put a TON of nutrition in there...

Siobhan, what's happening with your LO?  Did you get it checked out?  It doesn't sound like teeth coming through to me.

We always allow milk at night when Finn is ill.  I think about when I'm ill and need what I need.  He's the same.
The tweaking never stops!

Hi there,

Had her checked over and she has a viral infection and they cant give her anything to help except for the usual Calpol etc.  They said it can last for 7 - 10 days!!  She has been eating better today (breakfast & lunch) so I am a little less worried.  I did try a smoothie but she wansn't keen (I really liked it tho!), so I have been giving her jars of food as they are easier for her to eat.  She seems much happier today too and her gums have not bled since yesterday morning when I brushed her teeth, so that is a huge relief.  It's her Christening on Sunday and I so want her to be well so we can all enjoy the day.

Thanks you all soo much for your help and support - I really appreciate it.  Fingers crossed she will be on top form on Sunday.

Cheers,

Siobhan & Caitlin
