Thanks so much everyone
Fortunately, Dylan *only* had hives once today, unknown cause, but they were localized to his chin and cleared up very quickly. I made his lunch and brought it in for him today, and now he's home for the weekend, so hopefully the time will help to desensitize his skin a bit.
Have they changed the soap they use?
Not sure if it's been changed, but he did get his clothes AND spare clothes wet, so he was wearing a daycare shirt when I went to pick him up. We use Tide Free detergent and run a double rinse cycle on all of his laundry, so that's a definitely possibility... His crib bedding at the daycare gets washed with everything else though, and he sleeps on that without troubles. Wonder if the shirt getting wet playing outside might have transferred something?
Do they make their meals from scratch? If not is it possible there could be cross contamination issues?
They do make their meals from scratch, and the cook is aware of Dylan's allergies and is very accommodating. She has a tub of his margarine that she uses to grease the pans, for example, and on pizza days makes him a special pizza with no cheese, or on fettuccine day she'll separate some pasta and chicken before she adds the sauce to everyone else's. She is very diligent: One pizza day she even called me the day before to let me know that she had bought a different sauce accidentally that had cheese in it, and would I like to bring some sauce in from home so that she could use it for Dylan.
Cross contamination - using the same spoon for someone else then for your LO?
I don't think so, they're really careful. My SIL is Dylan's direct carer and she is almost more diligent than I am
Dylan has his own high chair that no one else uses, his own face cloths and utensils, so I think that is likely ok.
PP mentioned cross contamination. With severe allergies, that can happen quite a bit. Things like even throwing all his utensils/plates into a dishwasher with other plates/utensils with an offending food.
I never thought of that - they do just throw everything into the dishwashers. Definitely another thing to consider, especially on days where Dylan's meal needs special preparation rather than when the general meal is safe for him.
Has a member of staff recently got a pet that your ds could be reacting to?
Another excellent thought... Dylan is severely allergic to dog saliva (the first time he was licked by a dog he broke out into the worst hives I've seen, his eye swelled shut, and the actual white of his eye swelled
) though he seems to be ok with cats. I will definitely ask if anyone in the baby/toddler rooms have gotten a dog recently. Unfortunately, even if they did, I'm not sure what we could really do about it
Otherwise, is it something that the kids might be playing with? Do they go outside - is there a plant or something that the kids play with and might cause a reaction?
I don't think there's anything new in the yard, but I'm not sure so will definitely look into it. I have lots of environmental allergies so it's reasonable to assume that he might too. When we had the allergy testing done we only did foods and dust mites, so anything environmental is new territory...
Mashi - thanks so much for that information about the sunscreen! It did seem so sudden and unlikely, but with your experience it definitely seems like more of a possibility. I do have another sunscreen that I bought (an Aveeno one, we've had good luck with that brand for his eczema) so we'll try using that exclusively this weekend and see how we get on.
Might be something to ask the allergist - and it probably wouldn't hurt to call in the allergist on this one.
I definitely agree. I actually tried to call before work this morning, but of course they're on holidays until August 3rd
(Sometimes it seems that doctors always take holidays when you truly need them). So I will call then and see if I can't get in for a consultation, even without Dylan, just to see what he recommends that we do.
Thanks again for all the ideas and hugs. My brain was so muddled that I didn't even think of so many of these possibilities. Now I feel like I have a place to start
And this has become a bit of a novel so I will sign off now, but thank you all so much.
