Need help with 20 month NW
« on: July 25, 2010, 15:45:42 pm »
My son is almost 20 months old and has been a good sleeper for a long time, only waking if something was really wrong.  My husband was recently transferred and we had to sell our house and move out of state.  His company put us into a Residence Inn while we look for a house and complete the sale of ours.  I understand that this could be upsetting for him, but we've been here about a month.  His usual routine before we moved was wake up between 7:30 and 8:00 with a nap from 1:00 to 3:00 and bedtime around 8:30.  Now we are having NW almost every night.  We've eliminated tummy troubles.  He's had teeth coming in but I don't think that is it b/c this has been going on for about 3-4 weeks.  It could be night terrors, although he's awake when I go in there.  My biggest problem is that when I go in to check on him, he is wide awake for 2 hours.  If I leave the room to see if he'll soothe himself and go to sleep, he screams at the top of his lungs and bangs his head on the crib.  I've tried changing his diaper, giving him milk, etc.  Since we're even in a hotel I put him in the bed in his room and laid with him several times, and it still took him 2 hours to go back to sleep.  I'm 32 weeks pregnant, so PU/PD is not an option.  Last night, I decided that I needed to stop the lying in bed with him, so I got pillows and put my hand through the bars in his crib to rub his bak and let him know that I am there but it still took 1.5 hours for him to decide he was tired and go back to sleep.  I don't know what to do at this point.  We're going to be moving out of here soon, but I don't think it is being here that is the problem.  I would really like to get him back on track before the new baby comes.  Any ideas?

Hi,
sorry to hear you are having a rough time.
He's had teeth coming in but I don't think that is it b/c this has been going on for about 3-4 weeks.
I would not discount teeth. Canines and molars can take an age to come in. have you tried meds to see if it makes any difference? I think it would be worth it. if it does not help then at least you know that is not the culprit.

Are you sleeping in the same room with him? If he's used to his own room and now you are sharing one, that could be a factor. This sounds like a really stressful time for you! So much going on. I bet you ds knows it, too, which also may be a factor. I don't really have any advice for you...my 15 mon old is waking a lot at night now, too, after being on vacation and us being in the same room with her and I don't know what to do! So, good luck and I hope someone here can give you some guidance.

No, we're not in the same room.  He has his own room.  I've given him Motrin before bed to see if it is the teeth.  He slept through the night two nights in a row and then the day before yesterday he was up for 2 hours again and then last night he slept through (with no Motrin).  I'm beginning to think it's nightmares.  It doesn't seem to be these Night Terrors I'm reading about because he's definitely awake when I go in there.

Is he crying when he wakes, that is why you go in there?
Is it a cry like he is in pain? Are there any other symptoms?

I agree it might be teeth as we have odd NWs at the moment, even if we medicate.
And the NW can last up to 3-4 hours!

If we leave her alone, we get screaming and crying, and if we stay with her, then she fidgets and sometimes seems to want to sleep but can't seem to fall asleep, if that makes sense?

We have had a week of NWs then a few days of sleeping through. It does seem to go back to STTN then lots of NWs the next night... for instance, Sunday, Monday we had STTN, Tuesday we had lots of NWs, last night STTN, not sure what tonight will bring!!!!

That sounds exactly like what is going on.  He screams, he doesn't cry.  He used to wake up in the night and would cry out and fuss a little and put himself back to sleep, but this is worse.  When I go in there he is yawning and laying down and tossing and turning like wants to go back to sleep, but it takes FOREVER.  He STTN last night, but every night could be different, so I just make sure I go to bed by 10:30, that way, if I lose a couple of hours I can still function in the morning.  I just don't know what I'll do if he's still doing this when the new baby comes, I'll really lose it.

Big hugs... I hope it gets better for you soon (and everyone else who is eperiencing this at the moment!).
I'm just trying to take it day by day as I don't know what each day / night will be like. And going to bed early like you are!
I know you are not supposed to but I have on a few occasions let her sleep with us as that way, we will all get some sleep but then again, some nights she is just fidgeting lots so keeps us awake too so we all lose out :(

Can you do one night and your husband the next so that you both get rest?
