4month old and wakes 1 hour after going down
« on: July 25, 2010, 23:17:39 pm »
Hi -

My 4month old has been on an EASY schedule for 5 days, and she's become a much more predictable baby.   (Prior to EASY she was eating on demand, with irregular naps.)  Her current daytime schedule looks like this:

Wakeup between 6am-7am
Eat: 7
Sleep: 9:10-11:00 (she wakes up after 30-40 minutes to sleep and we have to sss/pat and/or pu/pd to extend the nap)
Eat: 11
Sleep: 1:30-3:00 (she wakes up after 30-40 minutes of sleep and we have to sss/pat and/or pu/pd to extend the nap)
Eat: 5:15pm
Bath: 6:00
Eat: 6:45pm
Sleep: 7:15pm
(Sometimes she will catnap, but it's not a guarantee).

For the first few nights, she had been sleeping pretty well until her next feeding at 11:30pm.  But she has a tendency to wake up approximately 1 hour after we put her down.  (This has been a habit of hers even before EASY.)  Sometimes she'll settle back down immediately, and other times it takes hours.  Last night we set a record at 3.5hours! She woke up at 8:30pm, I fed her at 10:00pm and she didn't fall back to sleep until 12:15am.  The whole time I was sss/pat and PU/PD.  It's time to figure out what the problem could be!  I breastfeed exclusively, both breasts for each feeding.  The number of wakes/night varies, but approximately 2 or 3 times.  She does not take a pacifier but she does sleep with a blanket.

Why is she waking 1 hour after we put her down?

Please please advise!

Thank you.

Tutu, I think your LO is probably OT after going from 3 to 7 without a nap. In your shoes, I'd try to make sure to get that CN in using sh/pat, pu/pd or even APOP if necessary.

And as I said in the other post I wrote to you about 40 minute naps, I think it's super important to figure out if it's a 30 min nap (OT) or a 40-45 min nap (UT). My guess would be OT b/c more than 2 hours a-time is a lot for a 4 month old. And if she has a short nap - anything less than an hour - the following a-time should really be shorter than normal b/c she won't be as rested.

Also, is she going from 11-5 without eating? This could be causing NW from hunger and/or waking from naps due to hunger. It also may be why she refuses to go down for a CN.

Agree with PP about OT being the cause for the NWs.  If your LO refuses to catnap, you might do well to bring bedtime up a bit to prevent her from getting really OT.

My DD has done the same thing ever since she was tiny. My first DD was really bad about evening wakings until she was 7 months old. I wish I had the answer, and if you find one please let me know!
