Raising awareness about food allergies
« on: July 23, 2010, 01:57:06 am »
Neocate (In the US) is looking for families to help us raise awareness about the diagnosis and management of food allergies in their communities. If any of you are interested in sharing your experiences with the local media, send me a PM.  Thanks!

For some babies, formula is the answer.  For some, breast milk with diet restrictions is the answer. Let's keep this civilized please.  There is no need to criticize anyone's choices about feeding.

While Neocate is a great solution for some babies with allergies I do believe more education is required by all doctors that deal with new moms to FIRST let them know there are ways they can still bf by changing their diet, if they so wish to do. So, it's the doctors I'd like to critcize! My dd had a milk protein allergy which caused her intestines to bleed into her diaper and our doctor (actually, the first 2 doctors) told me to immediately stop breast feeding and give her the formula. I decided to take it upon myself to read up on milk protein allergies and found out that I could still bf with a restricted diet. I changed doctors to one that was educated on bfing, and bf my dd until she was 18 months old (she eventually outgrew the allergy).

Kami sometimes formula IS the only solution for stressed out Mums, myself included...not due to allergies but for other reasons. It is a decision I did not take lightly but I do however have a happy, healthy 20 month old who was for the most part formula fed. Perhaps bear in mind what other mothers go through with their LO's before using such strongly worded opinions on formula feeding and also thank yourself lucky that you are indeed able to breastfeed your LO.

I do not want to incite any debate on the issue but as strongly as one mother feels about BF'ing there is another who had to live with her choice not to BF for whatever reason.

Thank you Emma.

And FTM, there are also mothers who had already switched to formula or chose to formula feed before their LO was diagnosed with an allergy and so it is not a case of simply choosing between hypoallergenic formula or an elimination diet and continuing to breastfeed.

Rachel - is this only for the American media or do they want stories from parents around the world? Is it only Neocate users who you are looking to speak with or any parent of a child who had allergies - we only needed Nutramigen and not Neocate, for instance.

Mashi, I am well aware that many moms make the choice to formula feed instead of bf with or without an allergy (?? isn't this common knowledge?). My point was simply that doctor's all around need to give all the correct information to a bfing mom with a baby that has allergies so that they can make a decision based on facts when they are deciding to either continue to bf OR switch to Neocate. My first 2 doctors told me I had to give Neocate- they did not tell me that bfing was still on option with an adjusted diet. For this post, I think she was talking specifically Neocate and babies with allergies to regular formula or something in breast milk, I don't think the original poster was talking about regular formula or babies without allergies.

It's an individual choice and no one has a right to make that decision except for the mom. I do have to say I think it's disgusting that there is pressure to feel guilty for the ffing mom and I think it's equally ridiculous that we put bfing moms on such a pedestal, I mean really, we're bfing, not walking on the moon or finding a cure for cancer, YKWIM? It never fails, that a discussion on feeding does get into a debate, it's sad that it's moms that often start this debate.

oh i was not trying to offend anyone i was just saying they should jump to formula being the answer i guess i was kind of ticked off that its obvs a drug rep for the formula and not a real person...but if you chose to go the formula route thats fine and you're decision i was not trying to imply that was wrong. i guess what im trying to say is i feel when it comes to allergies everyone jumps to oh give neocate and she will be fine like they jump to the conclusion its the only way...i have been given alot of grief for continuing to BF instead of giving her something like neocate,

anyway sorry if i offended you that came out worse than what i meant.

Hi! I am the original poster and I am so sorry if I offended anyone!  I do work for Neocate but I'm also a real person and mom. I didn't mean to start anything, honestly!! I haven't responded sooner to this post because I just had my third baby.  He was born on August 4th and I'm just now getting back into the swing of things. Again, I apologize if I upset anyone, that wasn't my intention! I just thought that there may be some moms on this board that did have success with Neocate and wanted to share their story.

Thanks guys

Congratulations on your new baby! Makes me almost want to cry- my ds turns one within 24 hours, I'm sad how fast the time goes by :'(. I know there's lots of moms here that have used Neocate with success, is it not the only totally hypoallergenic formula for babies with milk protein allergy (if they're not bf)? I'm sure you'll find some of those moms, maybe post on the bottle feeding forum too.

Thanks guys!  Time does fly doesn't it?  My other two boys are a bit older (almost 8 and 5) and the middle one starts Kindergarten next week!  I can't believe it.

And you're right, Neocate is not the only hypo formula, and some babies tolerate different formulas better and vice versa.  And of course there are babies who are able to bf when mom is on an eliminate diet...it depends on the family, the mom, the baby, etc.  In my opinion it's about finding what's best for your and your LO, YKWIM?

Oh, then I was wrong, I thought Neocate was the only suitable formula for milk protein allergy. I guess it's the most popular one as it's the one I'm always reading about in posts. And yes, you're totally right, so much on how a baby feeds depends on what the home situation is like. I was lucky in that my dd who had the allergy was my first lo so I had the time to devote to getting the diet and the bfing right (which took at least 6 weeks of hell), also lucky that I had a year mat leave (Canada) otherwise I would never have bf for as long as we did as there was no way I would have been able to pump at work as I travelled too much and pumping just didn't work for me first time around.
