23 months; OT, developmental, or am I missing something?
« on: August 04, 2010, 11:46:43 am »
We just had a pretty long run of a good routine, even when naps were late or short b/c of visiting, we got back on track very quickly and nights were going really well. I think we've done this for the last month, if not 6 weeks.

8-wake
2-4-nap
9-bed

Then DD started short napping. Was waking around the 1.5 hour mark and yesterday the 1 hour mark. I tried to compensate by putting her into bed earlier, but she wouldn't fall asleep until the usual 9:00. At the same time she started waking earlier in the mornings.

So we had something like yesterday:

7:30-wake (though I heard her stirring nearer to 7)
1:30-2:40-nap
7:30-I tried for bedtime, but she fought and carried on and said she was scared and I put a nightlight on for her until I went to bed, and she finally fell asleep nearer to 8:30

Then woke at 6ish this morning....Called me to get her around 6:30.

She is def. OT from the short nights. She seems to tolerate different length naps well IF she gets 11 hours overnight. But when she gets less, we head into the disaster, meltdown mode.

I checked for teething, I don't see anything as of yet. She is PTing and doing pretty well.

Thoughts? Is there a developmentally appropriate drop in sleep needs around this age? I'm afraid to put her up for a nap any earlier in case she short naps, which is what generally happens if I go with an early nap.

:(

Straight away i was going to say try nap a little earlier say 5.5 A instead of the 6 A but then you said she short naps  :-\ i just know with D the minute sleep starts to go a bit 'Off' an earlier nap and earlier bedtime are the answer.Have you tried the earlier nap recently? what happens one time may not happen another?

im a bit reluctant to cut naps TBH cos i think they need the sleep in the day as they are so busy but thats just my opinion.maybe if she was awake for a certain time rather than cutting it would help,D has to be up by 2pm no matter what nap length to get a 7.30 bedtime.

could you tweak her day a bit to even it out a bit more? she is doing 6 hrs nap then a 5.maybe if she could do a 1.30-3.30 then a 9pm bedtime that may help a bit.maybe she just needs a tweak.

i would think if she needed her nap cutting she wouldnt be falling asleep 5 hrs after a 2hr nap...i would have thought you would be getting a bedtime fight on your hands!

Lucy--I can try an early nap again at around 5.5 hours A....but of course we are in major visiting/traveling mode for the next week: today: swimming at my grandmother's, tomorrow: visiting a girlfriend and her twins, sat to sat: down the shore for a week!

I THINK I can set her up to nap at each location rather than trying to nap while traveling in the car and getting the inevitable short naps, but of course I don't know that she'll sleep at those places as she isn't used to them and she is pretty particular about where she is comfortable sleeping.

In any event, I'll try what you are suggesting during the week down the shore and maybe when we get home and see how that goes. (Isn't it so stupid when you can't SEE how to tweak for yourself and just need someone else to point out different options LOL)
