11-month old has become a very fussy eater
« on: August 08, 2010, 14:26:39 pm »
My 11-month old has all of the sudden (for the past 2 weeks) become a very fussy eater. When she was on purees, she would eat all kinds of fruit, veggies and beans (she has never been a fan of meat). Now that she's older, she wants nothing to do with purees, she wants all finger foods that she can feed herself. I can't get her to eat any veggies and she is mostly only interested eating bread, cheese cubes, yogurt and fruit at this point. I tried using purees as a spread on the bread, but she doesn't like that either.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Hi there.  :)

Is she teething?  That could turn her off foods at the moment.

Do you steam or cook the veggies or try raw?  DS1 wouldn't eat raw veggies but would eat them cooked because they were soft and easy to chew.

Sometimes all you can do is just keep offering, she will be the one to decide what she eats.  But do keep trying a good variety of things.  :)

Just thought I would send a little support your way.  DS is doing the same sort of thing for the second time around.  We went through the same thing maybe 1.5 months ago (?) and it felt like it lasted forever.  DS refused bottles, different cups, spoons, and every different type of food.  But he eventually came out of it (I was thinking teething was the culprit).  It is hard to remind myself of that this time around.  It is very frustrating!!  DS only eats a little bit as it is, though a wide variety.  Currently DS is only really eating crunchy things (cheerios, crackers, toast), some fruits and yogurt.  I have a few things that I have frozen in bunches (soup, meats, steamed veggies), that I defrost small portions of and offer at his meals.  This way if he refuses it is a little less frustrating that I wasted my time making things for him to eat.  I also offer bits of what I am eating.  DS does eat things that are put on toast and crackers as a "spread".  I put mashed potatoes and carrots on a cracker the other day and he gobbled it down, after flat out refusing them on a spoon.  In the mornings I try to give him his cereal with a spoon, which he usually refuses, then I put a few tbsp as a spread on the toast that he sucks right off!  Every meal I have to remind myself that he will get back to normal, though it feels like it won't, and continue to offer a variety of foods.  I certainly can't force him to eat what he doesn't want but I can give him the opportunity to eat a bunch of things!
Hope that helps!!

Thanks ladies, I keep telling myself that it's just a phase and at least she's eating something. I guess I will just keep offering different things and try to remain patient!

It's good to know I'm not the only one! Thanks for the support!

Oh no, definitely not the only one!!  It's so so normal for babies to be selective about solids.  Try not to worry and like I said keep offering.  :)

Hi...

Just offering my support too. My LO is 9.5 months and for the past week has flatly refused all solids. Since the weekend she will now eat cheerios, toast, yoghurt and fruit but that is it. It is so very worrying especially when you see other babies just gulping food down, any and every food! Before this she was eating purees I made of fish with veggies, chicken with veggies and believe it or not spinach was a real favourite. Now I feel like she's eating no variety at all. I keep trying to console myself with the fact that at least she is eating something. Big hugs to you as I know it is really hard.
