teething reflief, homeopathic and other, for MSPI bub??
« on: August 11, 2010, 05:17:18 am »
hi,
i've noticed lactose in the homeopathic teething relief i used with ds1. ds2 isnt teething just yet but i think they are moving down and prob only a month or so away so wondering what other options people used?
i'm fine with panadol and nuerofin but prefer to save that for sleeps rather than give it all day when possible IYKWIM, just wondering what else i can offer the poor kiddo other than teething toys and a wet rag to help inbetween ???
i used hylands teething tablets, nelson's teething granules or the boots teething sachets but they all have lactose in them.

kirry :-*

I read on some other allergy forum that the lactose in Hylands is not dairy derived.  I've no idea where, but perhaps contact the company and see what they say?

We used camilia for Dylan - a clear, water based liquid with no flavour. It comes in individual doses.

Lactose is milk sugar...is it possible to get it that is not dairy derived? ??? Their website does say that it is "in a base of lactose (milk sugar)"  - so we avoided it also.

I know it falls into the "teething toys" category, but have you tried Sofie the Giraffe?
http://www.sophiethegiraffeteether.com/
Have heard such rave reviews, better than other teething toys.

Like Vikki we also used camilla though ours was in granules to dissolve under the tongue.  Got it from the chemist and there's nothing else added to it, just camilla. Mind you, I did not find it very effective but I may not have been using it enough or giving large enough doses. ???

Sophie the Giraffe is awesome...we also got a teether by BornFree

http://www.newbornfree.com/Teethers-142531.aspx

We used Camillia too, but it never seemed to help Spencer and after her first two teeth the rest didn't cause alot of pain so we didn't need anything.

I *think* there is a pharmaceutical grade lactose that is so purely refined that it won't have any milk protein left in it.

I have heard the same as Bethany.

Hi,
I used the Weleda brand of Chamilla.
They do both drops and teething granules, no lactose in them.

Hmm . . . maybe what I read was that since most LO's are intolerant of the protein, the isolated lactose doesn't cause them problems. ???

I asked this on the reflux thread a week or two ago cos I was worried too. DS is teething really bad. I had some hyland's ones and in a moment of desperation (with what Liz had said about pharmaceutical grade lactose in mind) I used them. I've made a note of each time I've given them to him, but they seem to be ok for us.

Kirry - it was something DI mentioned about a change in her LOs reflux meds - perhaps ask her to pop over and add her thoughts?

I used frozen banana which was amazing, its not too cold for his hands but does the job well. I also use anbesol gel, hadn't thought of checking the ingredients but will add it to my list of 'possible things that turn my angel into a gremlin'

big thankyou to everyone for your replies, sorry it has taken me FOREVER to reply (life really is just a little more crazy with two kids, lol)

jenny, thanks for the reminder, it was my dietician who said about pharmaceutical grade lactose being milk protein free compared to food grade lactose that may or may not contain proteins. i asked paed about using teething relief with lactose and she said to avoid it but then she has prescribed Lactulose for his constipation and it contains lactose ??? so i have emailed her and will hopefully get more clarification soon. she also said avoid bonjella (and most other teething gels) for kingston as he is salicylate sensitive and most of these have salicylates in high levels so she prescribed Lignocaine Ointment (local anaesthetic) but i think i'll reserve that for when they are cutting.

vikki/mashi, what brand camilia did you use? the only ones i've found so far have lactose too :(

irene, where abouts are you located? wondering if i can get that weleda brand here.

pinkism, LOVE the frozen banana idea. just need to test bananas to make sure he isnt intolerant to them first!

mashi, just ordered sophie the giraffe, thanks for the tip it looks fab!!

thanks again :-*

well found the the weleda powder but it has lactose in it too :(

however, paed replied and said because he has an intolerance rather than an allergy he 'should' be okay with lactose as it's just the milk sugar and not milk protein, provided it is pharmaceutical grade lactose that is free of all milk proteins (said some MPI bubs still react but it is rare, and even many bubs allergic to dairy can still tolerate lactose). she isnt sure if homeopathic stuff is bound by same guidelines as far as using pharmaceutical grade lactose so would really have to treat it as any other food challenge. (and then went on to tell me that she doesnt believe in the 'science' behind homepathic remedies so she recommends other teething relief anyway, lol).

now if i can just work out a way to get the nelsons teething powder sachets or boots teething sachets here i'd be fine!! (found these WAY more effective than any others i tried with ds1)

thanks again for all your help :-*
