5 week old, can't keep her awake!
« on: August 14, 2010, 12:41:53 pm »
Hi there,

I'm following the EASY routine of awake at 7-8, nap til 10, awake til 11 then nap til 1, awake til 2, then nap til 4 when we do awake for an hour, catnap til 6 when we start bath etc just before 7 and aim to have her settled by 7.15 pm.

The problem I have is keeping her awake!! I got her up at 7am & she was fast asleep by 7.50, she stayed awake well from 10-11 & prob didn't doze off til 11.15 but now i got her up at 1pm & she has basically tried to stay asleep the whole tine!

In the night she has a dream feed at 10 which takes her through until 2/2.30am and she's up for about an hour & usually she will sleep til 6.30/7 but this morning she woke at 2.30-4am & again at 5am for 40 mins.

Any ideas on if I should adjust her schedule would be fab, thank you!!x

It sounds as though you just have a sleepy LO who is still having some issues with night and day.

This will settle down in the next few weeks I'm sure.

I would suggest sticking to an A time of 1 hour and basically doing the best you can  :). If you do get wakeful periods at night then keep her in the dark and avoid any interaction beyond meeting her care needs. She will soon get the message  :) :-*.

Where is she sleeping during the day? BW says a nice dark nursery for all naps but some other sources say to keep them in the light for daytome naps just until they have set their body clock to night and day properly.

Ultimately sometimes you just have to trust them and let them sleep. 5 weeks really is too young to get a proper EASY going for most babies, so there is a certain amount of going with the flow.

Hey there hun & welcome to the boards...:)

Congrats on your baby, I would really suggest following her cues @ this stage, she really is still very small and is adjusting, so I'd follow a loose EASY, following her cues and then really start sorting things out after the 6 week growth spurt.

That said, you could @ least start by trying to avoid AP, these are a few links that should give you ideas about starting off:

Thank you so much!! All those links are fantastic & great to know I don't need to obsess over timings, I had read it was a routine from 4 weeks so was a bit worried!

She varies her naps from in get nursery to the Moses basket down here or out in the pram, it's dark in her nursery but not so bad that it's the same in the night as the day.

Thank you so much, I'm off to read the links!xx
