Toddler suddenly waking crying in the middle of naptime

He used to go down at 1:00 and I'd have to wake him or go get him at 4:30. Sometimes I am not even aware that he is awake (and we have a good monitor in his room) as he just loves his downtime. However, for the past 2 days he has woken early and cries hysterically. Not really sure why, he still gets 2 hours of  naptime but he never wakes like this.

Something is obviously bothering him.  You mentioned on the BCs that maybe he might be teething?  Do you think that could be it?  T would often wake crying mid-nap when he was teething.

do you think it is attention seeking at all?  i know there is a new little one in the house and that there has been some crying going on there....could it be that he is associating the cry with getting your attention?  what happens when you go to him?

When I go to him he stops crying but he's still fussy. I am noticing teeth coming in but he still woke early after giving him motrin. So not sure what to think.
