want to implement EASY - need clarifications
« on: August 18, 2010, 15:00:28 pm »
i've been reading posts on these forums and i want to start implementing EASY strictly after LO has his 4-month shots and visit.  I have a few questions and a few issues that i need clarifications:

some background:
- his bedtime is between 6-7 pm, and he usually wakes up once between 12-2, and again at around 5
- he has no specific bedtime routine.  we feed his last bottle, hold him for 5-20 mins till he's sort of asleep, put him to bed and shh/pat him till he completely sleeps
- at night he's able to go right back to sleep after a feed, most of the time we left his room while he's still awake and he can settle himself
- he has mild acid reflux, and he's on medication which we give him at 5 when he wakes up.  we then have to wait 30 mins before feeding him.  we are considering delaying the medication till his next feed at 8-ish
- he's a catnapper.  the way we put him to sleep is the same as his bedtime.  hold for 5-10 till he's  kind of asleep
- he is usually not cranky, and even when he wakes up from a short nap, he doesn't cry (though sometimes appears tired), and can happily play till the next feed.
- his pattern is often like this: EASA ESA ESA ESA till bed time.

1. should LO not be in an overtired state when starting EASY? does it matter?
2. his night sleep seems ok to me.  would like to eventually move his bedtime a little later and his wake time also later. am i being realistic?
3. he currently sleeps swaddled.  while i sleep train him to sleep indepedently, can i also train him to to sleep unswaddled at the same time?
4. since he deosn't cry much, and can spend a lot of time on his own in his crib, how do i go by teaching him to sleep independently? should i just put him in his crib whether or not he's sleepy when it's nap time? and what if he's really sleepy before nap time since he woke up early from the previous cycle?

please help! i know these questions have probably been asked many times before, but somehow i can't use the search function.
well, to answer no.4 myself, i know for the first part of the question i should be doing shh/pat even if he's not crying.

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Hi there hon, have you read the books in preparation to get your LO on EASY?  What medication is he on for reflux?  When you say he's a cat napper - can you post your whole day for us complete with naps for us to have a look.  When you start EASY it's best to start out by logging what your baby does in the day.  Times and any cues he has shown for being ready for a nap, times you feed him and quantities, all that sort of thing.  Then we can help to pinpoint what needs to be done with regards to A time and feeds.

You can train him to sleep unswaddled but really it's best to have him on some kind of routine first, where things are predictable for him, before shaking up his world.  Swaddling is a very good calming techinique and part of the 4 S wind down that Tracy advocates.

Most LOs start EASY in OT because they never had a predictable routine before and they aren't usually sleeping at the right times.

If we can see what kind of day he's doing now, it will help get some additional eyes on here.

(((hugs)))
The tweaking never stops!

thanks for the reply! yes i have read the books but still have a lot of questions, that's why i posted here.

he's on prilosec compound for his medicine.

i did log his day for a month now - however, since we were still experimenting with the medicine and his reflux never got well for more than a few days, his days are all over the place, and i didn't think it's worth posting yet.  sometimes i feed him every 2 hours if he didn't take much the feed before, on days when the med is working well, he's on more of a routine because then he sleeps better and eats better, and i am able to feed him every 3 hours or so.

i plan to post his routine once i start it "officially", and that is when we are sure the medicine will be working over an extensive period of time (which will be in a few days). on any day though, i try to put him to sleep(the wrong way, i know) within 2 hours of wake time.

for the past 2 days, it's been disastrous as he all of a sudden doesn't want to sleep in his crib during his nap- and for now we blame it on his reflux.

i will post his days when i get home later today.  thanks!
