Green poo at 3 to 4 hr transition
« on: August 19, 2010, 19:39:49 pm »
A few of us going through the 3-4 transition (and maybe there now :)) have noticed our LOs having green poos. Well and happy babies, fully BF. As slightly obsessive Mums  ;)we are trying to figure out the cause.
Just wondered if it was something to do with longer times between feeds meaning more foremilk cos breast getting used to the new pattern.

Anyone any experiences??

Hi!
I remember having a phase of green poo and asked the dr and hv about this and they told me it was normal.
So I didn't do anything about it - wasn't sure what the cause was - but the poos did go back to normal :)
Sorry I can't give you any more info than that!

Here's some poop colour information for you from the FAQ http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=157413.0

The colour of your baby's poops is much less important than most parents think.
While the colour can be a sign that your baby has a gastrointestinal problem, such as a stomach virus or food intolerance, it is just as likely to be normal if your baby has no other symptoms.
Green poop is something that seems to get people very excited. It basically means that the milk has travelled through the digestive tract perhaps more quickly than usual. This can be caused by diarrhoea or a high fibre diet, but can also simply be normal.  Green poo from a happy baby gaining weight well is not a concern. (Dr Jack Newman advises new parents to buy sunglasses so they don't worry about it.)
In a BFing baby green poop might mean a higher proportion of foremilk than is standard e.g. when a mother has oversupply or a foremilk imbalance (usually a bright green not so khaki). Or the green poops with other symptoms could be a sign of an intolerance to something that Mama is eating or drinking, like milk or cheese.  However in both this cases a baby will often appear more unsettled than usual - gassier and in discomfort.
Signs that your baby's green poops might be caused by a medical condition could include that your baby is also fussy, gassy, has diarrhoea, or is vomiting. These additional symptoms could mean that your baby has an infection, like rotavirus, or an intolerance to something they is eating. Your baby might also have yellow poops when they have a stomach virus.

sorry I meant to add has your lo's poos gone back to normal yet?

We are still struggling getting 2hr (or anywhere near) naps... I'm gonna post over there. We are really stuck at a 3.5hr routine .. I wonder if that means I can expect green poos again when we finally get feeds 4hrs apart..

Update on the poo!!! :-D

She is totally well and happy, no hint of wind/tummy pain.
Poos getting more yellow and most yellow first thing in am. Still green and mucousy later though. It's only been going on about a week and usually we are right behind you LO Gemma so hopefully will settle. otherwise, may try cutting dairy.

My DH thinks I am bonkers as even if he changes the nappy I want to run up and see it. Actually, that does sound quite mad... what has motherhood done to me??!!

LOL about needing to check the poo in every diaper!  My lo has food allergies, so when I get brownish green mucousy poop- it is a sign that I ate something that bothered him, so I am constantly assessing the color of his poo.  My DH gets annoyed when I ask what color the poo was- he never knows :P  Sometimes he gets dark green poo that is stringy like seaweed.   This is from too much foremilk.  He used to get a few diapers like that when he was going through a growth spurt.  I hope you lo's poop is starting to get back to normal! :)
