Coconut milk in the UK?
« on: November 24, 2010, 12:52:50 pm »
Hi,

Does anyone know if you can get coconut milk ( as an alternative to cow's milk) in the UK?? I assume it is not the stuff you get in a can to make thai curry?!

Have had a google but can't find anything.

Thanks

The coconut milk I get is indeed the canned stuff. There is more than one coconut product that comes in cans, though, at least here in the States. Be sure you're getting plain old coconut milk, not coconut cream (which here has tons of sugar added, like for tropical mixed drinks :X). Shake the can really well to blend some of the solids and dislodge them from the sides.

Just had my breakfast smoothie a bit ago: I take some yogurt (optional, leave out for the non-dairy crowd), rice milk, and a can of coconut milk, about equal parts, and whizz it in the blender; you can experiment with proportions till you find one that's drinkable for LO. For my smoothies I add rice protein powder (found one that's also loaded with food-grade amino acids and even dried greens!), a bit of fish oil or flaxseed oil, sometimes a bit of dolomite powder for extra calcium (makes it a bit gritty if you're not used to it tho), and a couple drops of stevia and vanilla. Whatever I don't drink I leave in the blender pitcher and put that in the fridge, and then just whizz it fresh for my next serving.

I've also seen "coconut milk drink" in bottles recently in the health food section of our local grocery: coconut milk, water to thin it a bit, and a bit of sweetener. I don't bother with that since I prefer my smoothies, but you can keep your eyes open for it; it's a LOT less sweet than the stuff sold to make piņa coladas!

Flaxseed oil is for Omega 3's. Good fats, especially for brains. :)

Larger Tesco shops have it, with added calcium, in cartons - beside the soya, rice and oat milk :o)  We buy oat milk (Tesco seems to be only one to do the added calcuim one, with red writing on carton!)

That's the one - we bought it recently but DS tried to open it himself, managed and spilled it all over the floor! We then had a sick bug so didn't want to try DS with anything new so it went out of date before we could try it ..... looked okay though (apart from being all over my kitchen floor!!!).

My Sainsburys definitely sells coconut milk - it is the stuff in a can for thai food etc. Just check the ingredients as deb says that it's not sweetened.

With the oat milk make sure you shake it REALLY well - I opened a new carton and it was really yellow - when you mix it well it does get a bit more whiter!  It is really nice with porridge oats to make porridge :)

I use the Kara coconut milk from tesco's on DD's cereal, I like it because its quite tasty and even though its still too low fat the fats it does have are closer to milk other milk substitutes. And its fortified with vitamins and calcium and stuff which is good too. Worth a trip to tesco's for I reckon.
