The coconut milk I get is indeed the canned stuff. There is more than one coconut product that comes in cans, though, at least here in the States. Be sure you're getting plain old coconut milk, not coconut cream (which here has tons of sugar added, like for tropical mixed drinks :X). Shake the can really well to blend some of the solids and dislodge them from the sides.
Just had my breakfast smoothie a bit ago: I take some yogurt (optional, leave out for the non-dairy crowd), rice milk, and a can of coconut milk, about equal parts, and whizz it in the blender; you can experiment with proportions till you find one that's drinkable for LO. For my smoothies I add rice protein powder (found one that's also loaded with food-grade amino acids and even dried greens!), a bit of fish oil or flaxseed oil, sometimes a bit of dolomite powder for extra calcium (makes it a bit gritty if you're not used to it tho), and a couple drops of stevia and vanilla. Whatever I don't drink I leave in the blender pitcher and put that in the fridge, and then just whizz it fresh for my next serving.
I've also seen "coconut milk drink" in bottles recently in the health food section of our local grocery: coconut milk, water to thin it a bit, and a bit of sweetener. I don't bother with that since I prefer my smoothies, but you can keep your eyes open for it; it's a LOT less sweet than the stuff sold to make piņa coladas!
