soya free white bread in the UK?
« on: September 13, 2010, 07:08:03 am »
Has anyone found a loaf of standard white bread that does not contain soya flour?  I didn't even know they put soya flour in until I gave some to DS and he got a sore bottom  :'(

I have found organic wholegrain bread that is soya free and white bagels but no standard white loaves.  Anyone else found one?  There are no nice (or any, in fact) little bakeries nearby that may not use soya  >:(

Thanks

Hi, Waitrose website is always a good place to start as you can narrow down by milk and soy free items. Have taken a look and most breads are wholemeal though there is a white seeded loaf? They are Waitrose own brand so no good if there isn't one near you  :( Might help you with other things too as I assume they add branded food into this search.

Sorry I automatically said milk free above as that is what I always search for! You are only soy free  :P

MandS seem to do some, there must be one by you - they are everywhere now! ... found this list of soy free foods they sell

Hi, I am going to try going soy free too and went to my local Simply Food and found some white seeded bread. Now I am not a fan of the seded stuff but actually for toast this morning it was OK!

DH realised last night that there is probably so much soya in white bread at the moment due to a record-high price for wheat ... bread hasn't really gone up in price so they must be substituting wheat for soya to keep prices down :(

I was never able to find any when we were in England - we left in July 2009. But I needed milk and soy free so perhaps that was the problem...maybe if I'd been okay with milk it would have been easier? It might be easier to make your own????

I hadn't even thought about soya being in white bread until DS has problems with soya, so maybe it has always been the case ??? Yes, we should start making our own bread - we even have a breadmaker ....

That's the worst thing - DH even made some bread last night with it!! We cheat though and buy the ready made packets that you just add water to - not seen a soya free one ... so will need to bite the bullet and buy the raw ingredients!

Hi there,
The only white bread with no soya that I have found are those baguettes that you need to bake in the oven yourself from Tesco. They come in a pack of 4 but my LO loves them.
Otherwise, we get her the Golden Wholemeal bread from Marks and Spencers (but it's not white), crumpets or some of the wraps, like Mission Deli. I think there are some pitta breads that are soy free but they vary so much from supermarket to supermarket that I can't remember the ones we got (we haven't bought them for ages).
And when we are in the mood, we use the breadmaker!

Nah, its all good. I'm going to get a loaf and just use it for Dylan for toast. I'll store it in the freezer and just toast it as I need it.  :)  I was dreading having a constant supply of bagels in the house again purely for the fact that I love them and end up eating them myself drenched in butter. Not good for expanding waistline.  :P

Hi, I don't know if it helps but I work in a bakery.  Soya flour is sometimes used in improvers but not always.  Improvers are used to help keep bread soft.  It might be worth trying Aldi; I know, sounds strange but at the moment a lot of smaller bakeries produce for Aldi and they will produce products to different recipes to big plant bakers and may use soya free improvers for some of their recipes (although soya will be used in some products they produce).  Alternatively, I can't suggest enough that you try making your own.  Yes, it's a hassle but you don't have to do it every day and if you make it using a sponge method it tastes blooming fantastic!
Here's my blog which is focussed on simple food for babies, toddlers and families http://mamacook.blogspot.com/

Back again, they have sodding changed it, to bakersoft 'bit of both' with soya. I nearly had a breakdown in the tesco aisle today lol. However i have found a lead online.

"If you are looking for any soya free bread in the UK then i have found a few - a Crusty farmhouse white sliced loaf from M&S and the White & Wholemeal sliced from Waitrose. "

Guess where im going tomorrow. :D

I never managed to find that bakersoft one - but how annoying they have changed it!!!

We tend to just use Wright's and supermarket (Asda and Tesco, i think) own make bread mixes which you add water to and throw into bread machine - Hovis version has soya

bread machine bread is awful :( thick, small horrible loaves. :(

I did actually bake my own loaves a few years ago, after 10 attempts i mastered it, looked identicle to bakers bread, but i still cant get on with the taste. Tried lots of things, must be something in the bread improvers.

Not bad for an amateur eh :) Alot of work for 1 loaf mind.

Buy a new freezer and fill it with that bread!  ;) Not sure how good Aldi are with regulary stocking items?  ???

I remember when Sainsburys stopped stocking the bread I got Olly. Rang round half the supermarkets in the midlands trying to track it down. ended up begging and pleading to get it on prescription and it worked, so now I get it free!
