10 mo old awake for 2 hrs during night EVERY night
« on: September 15, 2010, 11:15:48 am »
My ten month old has been waking for about 2 hours every night for the past month.  It isn't always the same 2 hours.  He still takes 2 naps/day and goes to bed at 730pm.  Last night he was awake from 830-1030 however a lot of nights it will be from 10-12am.  He will lay in his crib and squeal or cry out every 5-10 minutes for about 30-45 min and eventually will start crying steadily so that my husband or I need to go in there.  HELP?  Is he manipulating us?

I would appreciate help on this one too!! My little one is doing exactly the same.
His routine is:
E - Breakfast around 7am
A - 7-9am
S - 9-11am
E - snack when wakes 11am
A - 11-12pm
S - 12-1.30pm
E - 1.30pm lunch
A - 1.30-3.30pm
S - 3.30-5pm
E/A -This is when the routine goes a bit wonky. He then has activity until about 6.30pm when we get home and I can give him dinner.
S - Goes to bed around 7.30pm

I still BF first thing in the morning and last thing before bed.

He is wonderful in every other way and used to sleep right through! The worst thing is that when I go in his room when he starts screaming he is fine until I leave and then it starts again. Is it seperation anxiety and if so, how do I stop it? Hubby and I both work and need to sleep!!!

Yes he is 10 months old.
Our schedule is as follows
Awake 630 (some days earlier as this may be a sign of 2-1)
E 700
A 630-930
Breakfast 930
S 1000-1130 (very inconsistent in length- some days 2 hrs, some days 1 hr 15 min or anywhere in between)
E 1200
A 1130-200
Lunch 130
S200-330 (usually a 1.5 hr nap, although sometimes inconsistent in length too, may be 2 hrs)
Snack 430
A 330-630
Dinner 600
Bedtime routine begins 630
Asleep 700-730
**We are having to see a Pediatric GI specialist because of reflux complications.  He is having to be put to sleep and have a complete endoscopy done in the next 2-3 weeks.  This may be completely unrelated but his night wakings of 1.5 hrs + may have something to do with it??  He refuses to lay on his stomach at all and we are wondering if it's b/c of discomfort.   He also won't roll from back to tummy.  Not sure if he can't or just won't.  Everything else developmentally is fine...he is crawling and pulling up already to his feet.
Any suggestions of what to try?

Hi Wendy, yes he is just coming up to 10 mths.
He goes to sleep fine, both in naps and at bedtime, but wakes screaming in the night and can't seem to settle.

Okay, so I had the same problem. I've been there ;) For the past 4 weeks, my LO was waking up about 1-2 hours after I put him down for bed. But I think I finally figured it out because the only 3 times in the last month that he didn't wake up were the times that I didn't nurse him to sleep. So, I tried nursing him a bit earlier or keeping him awake while I nursed, then I would put him to bed as usual with the full sleep ritual, and ta-da! It's worked for the past week!! Just be prepared becuase the first night he cried when he was in his crib, but I ddin't go in and he was out within 8 minutes. The next night was the same, only he cried for 5 min... the next night, no crying. My theory is that he is now much more aware of what's going on, and so if I put him in his crib sleeping, he would wake up screaming because the last thing he remembered was being with me... so, a little separation anxiety I guess. Hope it helps! :)

Thanks ABC Mom! I'm not sure that we have the same issue, but it is good to know that others are suffering in the night too!!! He has always gone to sleep in his cot on his own, both for naps and bedtime - I've never nursed him to sleep. I was really careful (having read the BW before he was born!!!) not to start those habits. I've just successfully stoped the night time wakings with PU/PD (although no PU as he is 10 mths old) and being textbook he has adaped almost instantly! However, now he is waking at 4/5 am and so I've just transferred the issue!

Aaarrggh!

At this age it tends to depend on their nap lengths really.  You have mentioned that they vary, thus his A times will also vary.  Also this is the age when they really start to show you how they like their A time served up.  Some kids like a long A time before a shorter nap, then they do a shorter A time and a longer nap.  Do you know how you plan to transition with LO?  Long AM or short AM nap?  I would try capping his first nap at 1 hr and see what kind of second nap you can get at a slightly shorter A time.

But first and foremost you need to rule out the possibility of medical concerns vis a vis his reflux.  If he's having discomfort no amount of routine tweaking will help.

Pheona, it may be best to start your own thread for this one.  But having a quick look I would say that at 10 mths his A times are really short between sleeps.  Has he always been that way?
