New and need help on night wakings
« on: September 22, 2010, 09:05:55 am »
Hi, just stumbled across this forum and was hoping you guys may be able to help me retain my sanity!!!

My 9 month old daughter has began waking in the night and taking a full bottle after sleeping through with no night feeds since she was 7 weeks old!  This began while we were visiting relatives a few weeks ago and I just put it down to her being in a strange place and not having proper daytime naps, but now we are home and she is back to her regular routine and she is still doing it.  She wakes usually about 2am, starts just whimpering which we have tried to ignore but eventually it proceeds to unconsoleable screaming.  I have tried cuddling her and putting her back down,  I can do this up to five/six times before finally giving up and giving the bottle.  Even then she doesn't always go back to sleep, she is usually awake for about 2 hours.  I am worried because I go back to work next week and work 12 hour shifts so reallt can't afford to be awake for 2 hours each night.

Her usual routine is:
8.00 Awake
8.30 Half of Bottle (usually all she will take)
9.30 Breakfast
11.00 Rest of bottle and down for nap (either falls asleep on bottle or self settles)
12.30 Awake
13.30 Lunch
15.30 Bottle and nap (either falls asleep on bottle or self settles)
16.30 Awake
17.30 Dinner
19.30 Bath, bottle, bed (either falls asleep on bottle or self settles)

And she used to sleep right through to the next morning.  We have always used her own cot and blackout blinds at night and at naptimes and this has worked perfectly since 7 weeks.  She still self settles and falls asleep no problem, it is just the waking that has changed.  Does this sound like separation anxiety?

Thank you for reading, and thank you in advance for any advice you may have x

I don't think SA has anything to do with it - I think it's just good old fashioned habit. Since she's only taking half a bottle first thing then she's definitely getting too much at night. I definitely suggest that you take a look here

Thanks for your reply, I take your point about feeding during the night, it is probably something I should avoid doing just so she goes back to sleep.  She only took half a bottle in the mornings even when she slept through with no night feeds however.

Oh really, that's interesting! At any rate it's pretty unusual for a 9 mo old to truly need a feed at night. So, weaning it would be a logical choice. :)
