(((hugs Grants))) Those NW and EW are causing OT.  Is there any chance of resettling him when he EW with a feed or something?  I know it's an AP habit but he's in nursery and needs more sleep.  One thing I have learned just very recently is that sleep takes precedence for these kiddos when they have busy days at school.  Your aim is at least 10.5 hrs at night, minimum.  I know it's easier said than done, believe me I know.  Treat anything before that as a NW and do not get him up.

The theory for the pattern you are describing is partially second wind and partially temperament.  Some kids are just happy kids, all the time.  They rarely get cranky.  And kids run on fumes when they are OT - propelled by adrenaline and other hormones that flood their bodies when they have not had enough sleep.  This makes them seem wired and happy and not tired.  But in fact they are beyond tired.

On 1 nap for a 12.5 mth old 1 hr 20 even 1 hr 30 is not enough, even with early bedtime.  That would be something more like what a 2 year old does.  I think you need to consider the 2 nap scenario or get a much longer nap out of him.  I am not contradicting the lovely Laura, and I am all for 1 nap at 1 year when it works.

I know you think he doesn't need sleep, me being the queen of a kid who thinks he's low sleep needs, can confirm that he needs more than he's getting.  For sure, at his age.  The reason nothing is consistent is because when they are low on sleep their body tries to self-regulate this, but at their age it does it badly.  So one night is short, next might be long, 1 nap is long, next nap might be short, etc. etc.  It tries to get the sleep it needs.

Are you sure there's no teeth playing a part here??

Hi Wendy!

Thank you so much for the comprehensive reply. Today he is at home with me and he slept for 2 hours. (10:50- 12:50). It is much better than what he has been doing lately. I managed to keep him in bed until 6:05am this morning. But some days it is impossible and he will not go back to sleep :( From next week on he will be going to nursery only Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Fridays he will be with DH, Mondays and Thursdays with me. So I think he will be having better naps then as he will be only 2 days at nursery. But having said that he was with me every day of the week as he only started nursery this week and I haven’t managed to fix his schedule! :(

I don’t think he is teething at the moment or he might be?!?! He seems fine during the day. I think he will be teething forever (lol) until he has the full amount of teeth, he only has 4 teeth at the moment.

Miguel has been having these NWs and EWs since he was 8.5 months! Do you think he is OT for 4 months?!?! I think I would know the signs of OT especially if he is OT for all this time??? I understand about the hormones you are talking about but surely he would have crashed at a certain point during these 4 months? He is so happy during the day. I thought OT would make him cranky?  I struggle to get more than 1.5 hour of sleep out of him when he is having only 1 nap and if he has 2 naps he can go on forever and it is a lot harder to put him down at BT. I have been doing the 2 naps when necessary for quite awhile and it doesn’t seem to be helping so I thought the 1 nap would be the solution for us?!?! Who knows…. I have tried everything and I had numerous posts in the general sleeping board so I’m not sure what I should do next??? I’m even starting to wonder if the Gro-clock will distract him too much with all the NWs???(I haven’t purchased it yet because after reading the specifications of the clock I started to have doubts about the moon light being on the whole night so it might distract him when he has NWs???

Thank you again for the support and advice! I really appreciate it! :)

(((hugs))) Haven't really got time to post now but will be back tomorrow.

I agree with Wendy on getting a longer nap as I don't think that your LO can go all day on that amount of sleep but maybe trialling the one nap and seeing if you can get a longer nap *may* help :-\

Hi girls , I also agree with you about needing more sleep. BUT, there is always a but :-( even when he gets more sleep during the day it does not seem to help and plus more sleep with 2 naps makes it harder for BT and the second nap(the short nap) has to be with AP(in the pushchair) as he does not settle after normal quiet time. :-(  today he woke up at 5am after exactly 10.5 hours of sleep. I tried to go in to see if I could send him off to sleep again but with no success :-( now DH will struggle to keep him awake until 11am and if he does he might be way too OT to have a good nap or maybe not??? I never know with this kid. Last night he still woke up at 22:20 (it woke me up- we go to bed at 8:30/9pm theses days to be able to survive) after that he still had a few moans throughout the night but I did not need to go on in. I think he has so many disturbed nights. Poor kid :-( do u think it is possible to have nightmares at this age? I will try to give him paracetamol tonight to see if it helps. Yesterday he had 1 nap of 2hours and went to bed half hour earlier than normal BT(6:30pm) and still had a bad night and EW??? Wendy and Laura please do not give up on me! I hope we can find a solution for this . By the way what do guys think about the groclock distracting him during the night? He is a very alert kid.

We won't give up don't you worry about that!

By the way what do guys think about the groclock distracting him during the night?
We use the groclock but don't have the stars shining at night time (DS didn't like it ::) ) it still works - you say goodnight to the sun, the stars come on and then go straight off again and then the sun comes on at the correct time in the morning.  It's really worth a shot - they had it on amazon for about £23.

I think for the next few nights you may have iffy nights because he's catching up.  I think what you did yesterday was perfect.  Today I guess it's up to you whether you shoot for one nap OR do a long am nap and then AP a 20min afternoon catnap.  What would be the earliest bed you could do if you decided to one nap and he short naps?

Do you think he is OT for 4 months?!?!
Probably lol!  I reckon my DS has been OT for a year!!! ;)

Thank you so much for the reassurance Laura! I just can not believe DS is OT for all this time! :-( this sounds crazy! Lol DS is with DH today. I will be in lectures the whole day so I do not think I will be able to communicate with DH much. What I said to DH before I left this morning was: that DS will feel tired around 10am if you think you can hold him until 11am it will be great but if you think he is too cranky then put him to bed a bit earlier. I do not think DH can read DS's signs like I do so I will have to see what happens. I will phone DH on my lunch to know what sort of nap DS had. If Miguel has 2 naps he won 't nap before 2:30 pm for the second nap and if he has a second nap he will want to go to bed at 7pm sometimes 7:45 or 8 pm! That's why I'd rather go for 1 nap. But I will have to wait and see how his first nap goes. I saw the groclock on Amazon too. So I will buy it then ! It does not tell you on the specs that you have the option to switch the stars off so now I'm sure it will be fine with him. :-)

I forgot to ask... M never had loads of sleep at nap time before the 2-1. He used to have 1 nap of 1 hour or 1:15 and another one of 45 mins or sometimes only 30 mins. He used to sttn with no problems at all on those naps. But ever since the 2-1 he stopped sttn?? So I do not understand why he needs more sleep now? It is so confusing?!

Things do go a bit wonky in the transition but hang in there.

I guess the big thing with going to one nap is that they suddenly have to do a much longer A time, rather than a bit of sleep a bit of A and then a bit more sleep iyswim?  Also he would be getting a bit OT due to NWs and EWs too.

Wendy and Laura please do not give up on me!
Nah my kid was up at 4:52 this morning and Laura's kid has crib parties at night.  Where would we go lol?

And yes there is a part of me that knows Finn has been OT for a loooong time.  He just handles it better than others, although less so now that he's older.  At some point they are aware they are overtired and start to get y about it.

And what Laura said about the Gro-clock and A times and everything.  Laura is very smart I'll have you know  ;) :-*

Thanks Laura for the answer. I finally understand it now.  Oh on Wendy! So my LO is a combination of your lo and Laura's LO?! This is more than I can handle!                                                      DS had a perfect day with DH yesterday! 1 nap from 11am to 13:05 and BT at 18:30. He still woke up around 22:00 and wait for it... He woke up at 2:50am and did not go back to sleep at all! We had to give him the bottle at 6am (he normally has the bottle at 6:30am) as he started with the hunger cry. Being awake from 2:50am made him hungry a bit earlier I guess. M never ever goes back to sleep after the bottle in the morning. He instead feels energized after having his am bottle. So there was no change he would go back to sleep after we gave him the bottle. So he only had 8 hours and 20 min sleep last night! :-( It will be interesting to see what time he will go down for his nap. DH is determined to hold him until 11am as he had enough of rubbish nights I'm quite soft on that department and think he should nap a bit earlier to avoid OT. But TBH I will follow DH's line of thought as nothing that I did worked in the past. I'm just glad that DH is home today to help me hold DS until 11am for his nap.

We managed to hold him until 10:45am. He is down now for his nap. Let's see how long he will sleep for. I can not believe this kid was awake from 2:50am to 10:45am! It is really weird!

(((hugs)))

Glad you got a good nap though the day before.  If you DS is awake for an hour tonight give him meds and see if that settles him.  Sounds like something was bothering him.

He only slept from 10:45 to 12:25. Not even 2 hours. After being awake from 2:50am to 10:45am is this enough? He woke up happy and in a good mood. DH tried to put him back to sleep again but he was not having it :-( now DH says he will do BTat 6:30pm to keep his routine going. I would rather do it at 6pm. What do you think?  I'm not sure maybe I'm being too soft and I should stick to what DH says ???

Sorry I'm too late now!  I prob would've tried a catnap and then 6.30pm bed.  Let me know how it went.  You don't think he was cold last night?

I would really try to get as much sleep into him as poss in the next few days due to that awful night - which probably means 2 naps.
