starting solids - how long does it take?
« on: September 28, 2010, 15:47:16 pm »
Hi all,

We just started rice cereal in BM yesterday and Ds2 has refused  - he spits out each and every morsel i try and offer him. How long should I try before giving up? He arches himself back as if I am killing him :(

Also what kind of finger food can i offer as he is less than 6 months?
He seems very ready and leans out to grab whatever a big person is eating..and suffers from reflux and maybe the giving of the reflux medi makes him distruct all food?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
9 and 6, oh boy!

If he's not going for it, I'd back off for a couple of weeks then try again. You could try something a bit more tasty than rice, pear was the first thing Stan ate.

Thanks Anna, might have to do that. We really need him to start solids for the sake of his reflux, which is getting better....but solids would help him.

Di you just steam and mash the pears?

Yeh, steam then push through s drive so they are a really fine purée. After a few tastes of that we mixed it with some baby porridge mixed with EBM

will try that. The rice was actually not bad as mixed with EBM....but pear will no doubt be better

Emma loved carrots...still does.

An early finger food would be those simple corn puffs. They dissolve in saliva so don't pose a choking hazard.

Gosh I can't believe Aadi is starting solids already!

I think the first finger food Stan has was a crust of really stale bread! Nothing to break off, just sort of dissolved to much and he could chew and chew it (like he did his toys) and nothing came off but the odd crumb.

Yeh, we did pear here first and then apple and carrot and then combinations of them all. I often mixed them with baby rice and BM.
You could try steamed carrot batons as finger food and any other very soft fruit like melon, peach.
Choose the very ripest fruit and cut them in the shape of chips!
I can't belive little Aadi is starting solids :'(
Oh, they grow up too fast :'(

they do grow up fast!

Will bring in his high chair today and get some puffs and steam a few carrots and get him to sit with us when DS1 is eating...

i wish i could hold him as a baby forever. I have enjoyed his babyhood a lot more. I guess I am maturer, less worried but equally stressed and knowing I am fighting reflux helped while lats time it was an unknown demon!

I'm so with you on this, Mukta :'( Actually, there's not a day goes by that I don't think about having #3 - although it would be crazy in every way, shape and form :'(
I've so, so so enjoyed Leo as a babe :'(

Oh, I also wanted to add that it took him a whole month (of dutifully steaming and blending every day) to eat any type of veg and then one day he just ate it all and that was it! He's a great eater now. So don't get stressed if he's not that enthusiastic - keep trying and be patient!

well i just offered him banana mashed between my fingers and that went down pretty well. Is banana an ok starting food? would a banan ring for him to feed himself be safe??

He seems to still be sucking and rooting with his tongue, so maybe he is not ready..what do you think?

Banana mashed with breast milk is def a great starting food - but it made Leo terribly constipated so just beware of that.
Just take it slowly and if he seems to be enjoying the solids then carry on!
