Is waking after 45 mins considered habitual waking?
« on: September 30, 2010, 03:02:11 am »
I know the 45 minute waking thing is very common. My sister has a 4 week old and he wakes after 45 mins for every nap and some of the night. Could you try the wake to sleep method or is that not the right solution to this problem? She has been doing the s/p but he still wakes like clock work at 45 mins every time. She even tried doing s/p as soon as he starts stirring (going in before the 45 min mark to be ready for it right away), but he wakes all the way up, screams and cries and takes a long time to put back to sleep. When he does go back to sleep she has to hold him because when she tries putting him back down he starts up again. When she holds him he will stay asleep until the 3 hour feed time, have a good feed and not be too OT. Anything else she can try? How long should the s/p take to work?

Oh yes it's definitely common and generally not a habitual thing, but rather a sleep cycle thing. She could try W2S but with a LO that young I think I would start with HTTJ (hold through the jolts). Is he swaddled?

Yes he is swaddled. She has also been trying a paci to get him back to sleep at the 40 minute mark but he is silly about taking it. He wants it, but he acts like he cant find the nipple in his mouth! He ends up getting really frustrated about not being able to "find" it but when he finally remembers how to suck it he calms down. Any tips for that too?

Can you tell me a little about the HTTJ? Do you put him down early like usual then go in before the 45 min mark and pick him back up or do you hold him the whole time? I am not familiar with it. Thanks so much for your help!

At 4 weeks he's still learning a lot so he will figure out the paci :)

You can read about HTTJ in the link I posted above.
