bread
« on: October 13, 2010, 02:05:37 am »
I noticed that my DD loves store bought raisin bread.  Takes after DH for sure.  However, I'd love to get her to eat something more nutritious along the same lines.  Can anyone recommend a nutritious bread that their LO will eat either store bought or homemade?  I'd love to get her to eat bread with veggies hidden but yet whenever I make these types I feel like I'm eating cake.

Just curious why you are wanting another type of bread?
I did a nutritional comparison of bagels (which are basically small loaves of bread) from our local bagel store, and was very surprised to see that some of the ones I thought would have been "better" for me weren't.
Many wholewheat type breads have extra sugar or fats added to keep the taste equivalent to things like raisin bread.  Raisin bread has a high sugar count because of the raisins.

TBH, my boys will eat ANY bread.  They are carb-o-holics! ::) :)  So I don't have any particular 'go to' breads.

I also have no problem with raisin bread. Yummy and relatively healthy too. Really good toasted with a shmear of cream cheese. Pepperidge Farms makes a "regular" one and a whole wheat one too if you'd prefer that.

Didn't know Pepperidge Farms makes a whole wheat variety.  will look into it.  thanks.
I was hoping to find a bread that I could incorporate veggies into.  I have googled it but was just hoping to find one that's been tested and approved by other LO's.

I've made this zucchini bread (before I realized that DS is allergic to the gourd family) and we all like it a lot. Is it more like a cake though (think banana bread-ish). http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipes/2580

you said that when you make your own, it comes out like cake, do you mean that it's not chewy like bread is??  Can it be the flour you use?  There's strong (high gluten) floor for bread and all purpose flours for cake and cookies.  HTH xx

I have had zucchini bread and it does taste a lot like banana bread, pumpkin bread etc.  It is really more a dessert, cakey type of consistency as Karen points out above.  Looks like "cake", tastes a bit like cake.......and has veggies in it.  How can you go wrong?

Also, I echo PP's.  I think prepared raisin bread from the grocery store is just fine. (Publix perhaps since you are in GA ;)

I didn't know that there was anything but AP flour.  i guess that could be why i feel like I'm eating cake.  thanks for the tips and I love Publix so I will check it out.
