How to preapre oatmeal?
« on: October 14, 2010, 10:11:35 am »
How do you prepare oatmeal please?? Does it have to be cooked out before using it or can it just be stirred through fruit purees like rice cereal can?

I am testing it our with wheat allergic DS and so far he seems to be doing ok with it - great news  ;D

Thanks  :D

If you have a box of baby oatmeal, like the baby rice, you should be able to mix it right up and eat it like the baby rice.

Right, if it's baby oatmeal there should be directions on the box and like Deb said can probably be mixed straight and given in the same manner as baby rice.  Otherwise, I'm not sure when it's ok to introduce regular oatmeal, but I think we may have tried it around 9mos with DS1.  You can get rolled oats which you have to boil according to the directions, usually 10mins or so.  Or you can buy quick oats which can be microwaved with water.  Then you can add milk and whatever you like, it would probably be good with fruit puree.  HTH  :)

Ah, that you'll probably have to cook up..... hang on, let me visit with Google a moment.... OK, here's one you can try. I'd leave out the butter and substitue more water for the milk at this age. http://www.ehow.com/how_2242991_cook-steelcut-oats.html.

When Josie turned out to not tolerate baby rice well, we tried barley and oatmeal as well, and I think oatmeal is what she tolerated best (might've been barley, but oatmeal would have been OK at that age).

OK thanks. I was hoping I could just chuck it in his fruit puree like I was with rice cereal as a bit of a thickener.  :)

Felt that a saucepan might have been too big for a tablespoon of oatmeal so found a way of doing it in the microwave, how easy is this! ;D
